Henry Kissinger, the former U.S. Secretary of State, believes that “Russia has, in a way, already lost the war” in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, as the war continues, Ukrainian officials revealed on Saturday, 1 Oct. 2022 that their forces have encircled thousands of Russian troops around the eastern town of Lyman, in a battlefield rebuttal to the Kremlin a day after it proclaimed the region to be part of Russia.

Russian president Vladimir Putin signs accession treaties to annex the occupied Ukrainian territories to Russia. The new subjects were the Donetsk People’s Republic, Lugansk People’s Republic, Kherson Oblast, and Zaporozhye Oblast. The assession treaties must be ratified by both houses of the Russian Duma before becoming effective under Russian law.

Attacks on civilians, as the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues, sees Russian forces strike a residential neighborhood in Dnipro with a cruise missile. The attack kills a family of four. Two children were counted amongst the dead. A further 18 civilians were injured during the attack.

Aung San Suu Kyi, ousted leader of Myanmar, is sentenced to further three years’ imprisonment for “violating the state’s secrets act”. Suu Kyi is already serving 20 years on other charges.

Dmitry Peskov, the Press Secretary of the President of Russia, said that the Kremlin is scheduled to sign agreements on the annexation of the occupied territories of Ukraine to Russia on Friday, 30 Sept. 2022.

Kazakhstan, since Russian president Vladimir Putin ordered a military mobilization, reported that around 98,000 Russian civilians have entered the country by land and air.
Meanwhile, reflecting Kazakhstan’s recent reports, Latvia announced a state of emergency over the influx of Russian citizens. Russian citizens are fleeing mobilization. Extraordinary measures are being taken in the border regions and at all ports of entry.

Leaders from Poland, Norway, and Denmark hold a ceremony to open the Baltic Pipe natural gas pipeline that will transport natural gas from the Norwegian shelf.
