A War Of Angels
On The Front Lines Struggling To Survive

I consider myself one of the lucky ones. I’ve got food in the pantry, and for now, toilet paper, paper towels, and sufficient sanitary wipes my wife and I believe will suffice.
I’ve got a roof over my head, a steady income (for now) to pay the bills, and I’m working from home where it’s safe. Aside from the occasional bouts of “cabin fever,” I’m good.
Yea, me, right? Well, this isn’t about me.
Last night the thought slammed into me doing ninety to nothing. What about all the angels out there fighting this pandemic war? What about all the doctors, nurses, hospital administrative staff, technicians, and orderlies?
What about all the first responders? The firefighters, the police, the emergency medical technicians?
What about them? Each of them is fighting this war.
“It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance, more desolation. War is hell.” ― William Tecumseh Sherman
In Time magazine, Tara Law’s article describes the effects of health care workers who’ve been fighting this microbiological enemy for months. Despite acute risks to their own health, a severe shortage of PPE, death surrounding them at every turn, plus impossible work-hours, these angels on the front lines are waging war attempting to stem the tide and turn things around.
And as it occurs in most wars, these front line warriors are suffering from battle fatigue and post-traumatic stress, before, after, and during shifts of chaos that would send most of us cowering in a corner.
They are working sick. They are fighting a genuine and present danger each hour, each minute, every second they’re working as they don what little protection they can and expose themselves to death so that others may have a fighting chance to survive.
And they are afraid.
Not so much for themselves. It is the nature of a caregiver to put the health and well-being of others before their own.
These angels fighting on the front lines every day are afraid, and their fear is not unsupported. They are now witnessing death and dying first hand every day. Now they see it in unbelievably staggering proportions, and they understand that in this war, there’s a chance they could bring that death home to their families.
And it literally tears them apart. Often causing such mental anguish, they discover it’s difficult to heal themselves, to keep themselves fit and well-rested enough to treat others.
And yet they press on, battling this pandemic monster in surgery rooms which have been converted into ICU(s), fighting the death around them with strained-to-breaking staff, limited PPE and an influx of new patients in critical need of care.
These angels of war are out there doing what they’ve been trained to do.
Some might be thinking that these angels get paid to do this job of theirs. Some might say they of all people should understand things such as this are to be expected. But I submit for these self-sacrificing people now fighting a disease of chaotic and epic proportions, no amount of money will ever assuage a single loss of life.
Whether that be a loved one, someone they are meeting for the first time, or themselves.
I, for one, lift my hat and bow my head in prayer and praise for all of the first responders, the firefighters, and police; these angels of war who choose to fight this pandemic around the globe.
These angels are willing to fight this war, to put their lives on the line so we can remain safe in our homes, away from the front lines and the danger. These are the angels we should praise every day and offer help any way we can.
These angels of war are the true heroes and heroines of this battle. And I for one, will not forget what they have done, nor will I ever forget what they are doing now in the face of such monstrous adversity.
I admonish each of us to turn our thoughts to these angels who are fighting this war for us. Continue to keep their safety and the safety of their loved ones in your thoughts and your prayers.
They are fighting for us, these angels of war, and in turn, sacrificing so much of themselves for us.
