Exploring the Northwest Argentine Patagonia by Strolling Along the Limay River’s Coastline
Experience serenity as you observe the soothing ebb and flow of the waters

“A river is water is its loveliest form, rivers have life and sound and movement and infinity of variation, rivers are veins of the earth through which the lifeblood returns to the heart.” — Roderick Haig-Brown
I accompanied my husband on a business trip to Buenos Aires and Neuquén, Argentina, for one week in June 2022.
Being in the Southern Hemisphere, Argentina experiences opposite seasons to those in the Northern Hemisphere. Thus, winter falls between June to August.
However, the climate of Argentina varies depending on its geographical location.
While Buenos Aires, situated in the country’s central region, experiences relatively milder winters, Patagonia, located in the southern part, observes much lower temperatures during this time.
Neuquén
- Neuquén is a province in Argentina, located in the west of the country.
- It is bordered by the provinces of Río Negro to the south, La Pampa to the east, and Mendoza to the west, and by Chile to the west.
- The capital of the province is the city of Neuquén, which is located in the valley of the Neuquén River.
- The province is known for its oil and gas reserves, as well as for its agriculture and tourism industry.
- It is home to a number of national parks and natural reserves, including the Nahuel Huapi National Park, which is a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and skiing.
- The province has a population of about 1 million people.
Per Patagonia-Argentina.Com:
“Neuquén, “audaciousness” in the Mapuche tongue, is one of the most vigorous cities in the country and has the highest growth rate in Patagonia. It is located where the Limay and Neuquén rivers join together, where the Río Negro is formed.”
My Visit
On a weekday morning, I took a guided tour of the magnificent Limay River, which is among Argentina’s most significant rivers and runs close to the town of Bariloche.
The chilly weather made the air crisp and refreshing. Apart from some city workers who were tidying up the area and a few stray dogs, there were hardly any people around.
Taking a stroll alongside the river was a delightful way to spend the morning, as it was serene, tranquil and provided beautiful views.
Check out these photos and let me know what you think.
