“Visitor tours of the palace will serve as a knowledge base and boost cultural understanding of the UAE.”Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s founding father, tweeted shortly before the opening of the palace.

My family and I had the incredible opportunity to visit the Middle East, exploring Bahrain, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi in September 2022.

The rich culture, stunning architecture, and warm hospitality of these places made our stay truly remarkable.

As we immersed ourselves in the local customs and traditions, we also ventured out to nearby attractions, including a guided day trip to Abu Dhabi from Dubai.

There, we had the privilege of visiting the esteemed Qasr Al Watan, which is the Presidential Palace of the United Arab Emirates.

Qasr Al Watan — Presidential Palace

  • A splendid edifice adorned with a frontage crafted from white granite and limestone, along with a dome boasting a diameter of 37 meters, concluded construction in 2017.
  • Qasr Al Watan is the Presidential Palace of the United Arab Emirates, where the Federal Supreme Council and the Council of Ministers meet.
  • Qasr Al Watan is also the location of major political gatherings, and foreign leaders visiting Abu Dhabi are welcomed here.
  • The palace was named one of the top landmarks of world art and culture and was closed to the public until 2019.
  • Its magnificent gardens and great halls are now open to the public.

Per Gulf News:

“The opening of Qasr Al Watan to the public is also in line with the UAE’s ambition to become a knowledge-based economy as part of Vision 2021, which aims to put the UAE up among the world’s best countries by its 50th anniversary in 2021.”

Our Visit

Located at the western extremity of Abu Dhabi Island in the Ras Al Akhdar area, the Presidential compound spans an impressive 380,000 square meters.

Situated directly adjacent to Emirates Palace, the Presidential Palace is often mistaken for the Royal family’s residence; however, it is, in reality, a breathtakingly luxurious hotel. You can read more about our Emirates Palace visit here.

Our adventure into this realm of splendor kicked off smoothly — passing through security, we hopped on a cozy shuttle bus that graciously took us from the Visitor Center to the main palace building, which houses the Great Hall and two other wings.

Stepping inside, we found ourselves immersed in a world of luxury. Each room unveiled a unique character, and we leisurely spent a couple of hours marveling at the intricate details.

The entire grounds, impeccably maintained, exuded an undeniable serenity, creating a peaceful atmosphere.

What struck me was the realization that this colossal structure, Qasr Al Watan, primarily serves as a hub for entertaining and hosting foreign guests. During our exploration, the site exuded a surprising serenity, allowing the true magnificence of the palace to shine through.

In my personal opinion, the Presidential Palace effortlessly captures the essence of royalty, even outshining the renowned Emirates Palace. Its allure extends beyond the exceptional architecture and luxurious interior design to the enlightening exhibitions on Arab and Islamic history and culture, making it an absolute must-visit.

Qasr Al Watan seamlessly blends traditional Arabic architecture with cutting-edge technology. The monumental structure boasts lavish elements like marble, intricate mosaics, and even 14k gold plating.

The exterior, a breathtaking vision of gleaming white buildings against the canvas of clear blue skies, serves as a prelude to the opulence that lies within.

As our visit came to an end, the shuttle effortlessly whisked us back to where we began. A thoughtful touch was the conveniently placed and complimentary parking near the entrance, adding an extra layer of convenience to the entire experience.

Mirrored cubes strategically placed at each corner enhance the captivating details, making Qasr Al Watan Palace a must-visit for cultural enthusiasts in Abu Dhabi.

A remarkable masterpiece was found in the direction of the East Wing of the Palace. This was undoubtedly one of the most renowned art pieces here — the ‘Power of Words’ sculpture.

Crafted by Emirati artist Mattar Bin Lahej, this cage-like sculpture is adorned with gold plating and symbolizes a crucial aspect of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s legacy.

The sculpture features a profound quote by Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan: “Wealth is not money or oil; wealth lies in people, and it is worthless if not dedicated to serve the people.”

The garden surrounding the palace features two additional silver sculptures that glisten in the sunlight. Complementing the impactful Power of Words sculpture inside the palace, these outdoor artworks are also adorned with thought-provoking quotes attributed to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

One of the sculptures bears the words: “Science and history walk side by side. By using science, man can record his history and preserve it for generations to come, so others may learn from it and come to know what their ancestors achieved.”

This quote emphasizes the inseparable connection between science and history, highlighting the role of scientific advancements in preserving and passing down the rich tapestry of human achievements through time.

The second sculpture carries the message: “The education of our people is a great wealth. We are proud of our educated nation because through knowledge and science, we will open the horizon to a glorious future.”

Sheikh Zayed’s words underscore the value placed on education as a key asset, contributing to national prosperity and envisioning a future illuminated by the limitless possibilities that knowledge and science bring.

These sculptures are deliberately crafted to invite visitors to step inside them, encouraging a unique and immersive perspective.

The intention is for individuals to appreciate the sculptures not just as static artworks, but as dynamic installations that engage viewers and provide a different vantage point, symbolizing the evolving nature of knowledge and the continual journey towards a brighter future.
