A Poem About Honesty

It’s just another name That I used to call myself As a child, I would pretend To be the thing that I was not.

And now I know that it’s not about pretense. Because for every little lie I tell myself; it’s another hole in my soul. And every time that I say something untrue, I’m still waiting for the day to come when one of those lies comes back to me: bigger, louder, and more honest than the truth. But the truth is a vast ocean.

And you can’t see to the bottom of it. You can’t swim in it. You can’t dive into it. It’s a mystery that’s hidden from the eye, but you had better start swimming soon, because this vast ocean is what’s around you, and if you don’t do something quickly, your ego will simply drown… so listen to me; this isn’t about faking out people or pretending to be something that you’re not. And you shouldn’t be afraid to be who you are. This isn’t about trying to make yourself into something that you’re not.

It’s about being honest with yourself and realizing that you really are… beautiful, and good, and true. Honesty is not a lie; it is just a story that you can finally tell without trying to hold your breath under the water of this vast ocean of truth: from now on when you talk to yourself, let it be in honesty.

Because the truth is a vast ocean. And it’s rich and thick and deep, and you can swim around in it, you can swim with the sharks of your fears and your regrets, of all the things that you have done wrong in your life… but still, at least you have the truth. And if there is anything worse than swimming through this vast ocean… it’s faking out there at the surface. But the surface is a lie. Because the surface is what you pretend to be; and you can’t swim there forever; so if you are staring up at your reflection, and all of a sudden it turns into nothing but an empty mask… then don’t be afraid to say “I’m not who I seem to be.” And if you say it, I swear, for once in your life… it might change everything. And when you do… I’ll be waiting for you.
