Summary

Central Michigan University mistakenly awarded 58 students with full-ride scholarships due to a clerical error, initially retracting the offer but later deciding to honor the scholarships.

Abstract

In a significant administrative oversight, Central Michigan University erroneously informed 58 high school seniors that they had been granted full-ride scholarships, covering tuition, room, and board, along with a stipend. The students were initially overjoyed, believing they had secured a substantial financial aid package. However, the university soon realized the mistake and retracted the scholarship offers, leading to immense disappointment. Considering the potential backlash and the impact on the students' futures, the university ultimately chose to uphold the scholarships, committing to an estimated $3 million over four years to support these students' higher education. This decision underscores the importance of scholarships for students from less affluent backgrounds and highlights the university's commitment to nurturing future generations despite administrative errors.

Most high school graduates want to attend college

College is a highly anticipated event for most high school graduates. They apply to multiple colleges hoping to get accepted. If they are good students, they are likely to also apply for college scholarships to help with expenses. Scholarships are especially important for students whose families do not have a large abundance of money available for college.

Not only is college a time of fun and excitement for young people, but it is an important time to prepare for the future. Education is vital in helping them find more success in life. College helps them grow in all phases of their lives.

College and university training helps students as they transition into adulthood from high school. They learn how to be good citizens as they study.

Megan Cerullo reported for CBS News: “School wrongly gave scholarships to 58 students. Now it’s making it right.”

A university’s new student messaging system resulted in a costly clerical error after staff members were testing out the technology.

Central Michigan University has mistakenly notified 58 students that the school had awarded them full-ride scholarships. This means that their tuition, room, and board, plus an additional stipend would be provided to them. The high school seniors who had applied for the scholarship were told that they had been admitted to the honors program at the university.

Of course, the students must have been elated. A full-ride scholarship is worth a lot of money and is a real asset to any student.

Then the students were informed that they had not won scholarships and that there had been a mistake made. What a huge disappointment that must have been!

After consideration of the huge disappointment for the aspiring college students plus a potential public relations nightmare, the college reversed its decision. They said they would cover the full cost of the students’ tuition. In some cases, it was equivalent to a full-ride scholarship. It is estimated that full tuition for the 58 students foru four years would amount to around $3 million.

It is not money going down the drain or being burned up. The students had applied for scholarships so they were likely deserving of scholarships although they may not have been selected. It should be money well spent in educating deserving young people who will be helped to graduate from college.

Although the clerical error had occurred, the students will now be assisted in obtaining college degrees.

It will greatly help them in making their way in the world to become productive and successful members of society.
