Summary

The author proposes a satirical "uniquely American solution" to simultaneously address debates on abortion and gun rights by suggesting that fetuses be armed.

Abstract

The article presents a tongue-in-cheek proposal to equip fetuses with firearms as a means to reconcile the contentious issues of abortion rights and the right to bear arms in the United States. The author argues that if a fetus is considered a person with rights, then under the Second Amendment, it should have the right to self-defense. The satirical solution involves inserting a tiny gun into the fetus's hand after seven weeks of gestation, which would theoretically allow the fetus to defend itself during an abortion procedure. The piece acknowledges the absurdity of the idea, suggesting it as a method to provoke thought and encourage innovative problem-solving for complex social issues. The author emphasizes the conceptual nature of the proposal and discourages readers from taking it seriously, using humor to highlight the challenges in finding common ground on deeply divisive topics.

Opinions

  • The author suggests that some individuals believe a fetus should have the same rights as a living person.
  • The right to bear arms, as protected by the Second Amendment, is presented as a fundamental American right that could extend to fetuses.
  • The idea of arming fetuses is presented as a satirical solution to deter abortions and encourage responsibility in sexual relations.
  • The author uses hyperbole to critique the difficulty of finding middle ground on polarizing issues such as abortion and gun control.
  • The article concludes with a disclaimer, emphasizing that the idea is not to be taken literally and is intended to spark conversation rather than serve as a practical proposal.

A Uniquely American Solution

It’s obvious that some problems in this country need an innovative, uniquely American solution. To tackle these issues we need new ideas.

The two main issues at the moment are what to do with a fetus and what to do about guns.

At first glance, the two subjects appear to be completely separate. That is what the standard thought is. To tackle these two seemingly different issues, a new train of thought needs to be considered. Something truly out of the box, as it were.

There is a belief that some people have that a fetus is a person. A living being that should be afforded all rights and privileges of a living, breathing American granted by our United States Constitution.

One amendment, the 2nd amendment, protects the rights of all Americans to bear arms, meaning that they can own and store guns and the government has no right to take them.

That brings me to a solution to these issues that I have been contemplating for a few hours. A solution that I believe, once presented, may allow us to find common ground and be united in our collective agreement.

Arm fetuses.

If, in fact, a fetus is a person, he or she has every right to defend itself. A tiny gun can be developed and a doctor or certified technician can insert the weapon into the hand, or hands, of the fetus, after, say, seven weeks of gestation.

If an abortion is performed after seven weeks and if it shot the doctor or hospital staff, the fetus would be regarded as ‘floating your sac’ as in the amniotic sac. It would be like standing your ground, only it’s a fetus.

An armed fetus would also be a deterrent for people having sexual relations. A couple would surely think twice if they knew that the baby they would conceive may end up armed and dangerous.

This idea is in the conceptual stage and obviously needs to be work-shopped. Further ideas are open for discussion. A uniquely American solution requires all Americans to work together.

If anyone should try this idea after reading this post, what are you? Nuts? This is a stupid idea! I’m questioning myself for having the notion to write this. Don’t even consider it. Go bowling or something until the thought passes. Thank you.
