Summary

The undefined website presents #POMprompt 17, inviting poets to share a journey through their poems, explaining the inspiration and process behind them as if telling stories to a child.

Abstract

The undefined website introduces #POMprompt 17, a creative challenge for poets to take their readers on a "Walk Down Poetry Lane." This initiative encourages writers to describe the origins of their poems as if giving a walking tour, revealing the personal stories and inspirations behind their work. Participants are asked to write in a conversational style that engages their audience and to tag their contributions with "POMprompt" or #POMprompt for visibility. The prompt is exemplified by a pre-written poem linked in the post, which serves as a model for the desired approach. The aim is to provide an inside look into the poet's creative process and personal experiences, making the poetry more accessible and relatable to the reader.

Opinions

  • The creator, Christina M. Ward, believes that poetry can be enhanced by sharing the stories and inspirations behind each piece.
  • The prompt suggests that the narrative around a poem's creation can be as compelling as the poem itself.
  • There is an emphasis on community and mutual support within the POMfam, acknowledging the collective effort of editors, moderators, and helpers in the POM groups.
  • The prompt encourages a conversational and engaging writing style, prioritizing reader interest and the sharing of personal insights.
  • The use of tags and linking back to the original post is seen as crucial for community engagement and the spread of the POMprompt initiative.

I’ll begin this POMprompt with a link to the response, which I have already written — inspiring the POMprompt. I admit fully to being a little backward lately. (Or as we say here in the south, bass-ackwards.)

Welcome to #POMprompt 17!

The point of this POMprompt is to take your readers on a “Walk Down Poetry Lane.”

Imagine your poems are sights along a country road and you are giving a walking tour. Tell your reader how that poem came to be. What was the process or inspiration? Tell the story behind the poem as if you were showing photographs to a child and giving them the story of their family members. Make your reader feel they are sitting at your feet, hearing your stories.

Make it pleasant, interesting, revealing. Take us on a journey. Teach us something about yourself through the stories of your poems. (It will make a lot more sense if you read the one I have written linked at the top of this post.)

This is your chance to highlight a few of your poems and give us the inside scoop. We have our popcorn and our cameras — we are ready for your “Trip Down Poetry Lane.”

Where will you take us?

Here’s the POMprompt #17 and how to participate:

  1. Read the I Hope You Aren’t Missing These linked at the top of this post — this will give you a good idea of how this prompt works.
  2. Write your own “A Trip Down Poetry Lane,” in a conversational style that keeps your reader’s interest and takes them on a journey.
  3. Publish it in whatever publication you like.
  4. Tag this post (so others can play) or tag me ( Christina M. Ward) in your responses so I can see what you write.
  5. PLEASE use “POMprompt” as a tag and/or #POMprompt when sharing on social media.

That’s it! I look forward to reading your responses.

Christina M. Ward is the creator of the Poets on Medium movement, the POM.

Many thanks to the editors, moderators, and helpers for the POM groups: Ashwini Dodani, Arjan Tupan, Samantha Lazar, and Sam Kimberle! And to all our fabulous writers!

Together, we are the POMfam.
