A Tree Without a Forest

Would you want to be one?

Ever since I was a wee tot I have been an ardent tree-hugger. No matter where I might be the first thing I do in a new place is look around at all the trees. They are divine beings that deserve acknowledgement of their presence. But so many people do not even notice them. I try to say a mental hello to every one of them.

From the backseat of my dad’s 1957 Chevy my childhood eyes were always glued to the landscape shooting past. We did a lot of traveling and moving so I saw a good deal of Turtle Island and beyond. We drove through deserts and farmland and prairie, through stressful big city traffic, through forested hills, through high-mountain pine forests. Every place had its own vibration.

As a silly kid I wanted to embrace every scene, burning it forever into the skein of time and space. I wanted to FEEL it. And I personally wanted to embrace every tree that I saw out of that back-seat window. Sometimes just a fleeting psychic acknowledgement and communication of love. Driving up in the high-altitude pine forests at the speed limit, it was impossible to give a personal howdy-doo to each and every single solitary tree. There were just too many of them.

So I instead tuned into the mass consciousness of the FOREST. And I was immediately hooked. Wow! What an exhilarating high-frequency vibrational experience.

I really loved it when the family would stop for a rest up in the mountain forests. My parents had to keep an eye on me for I had a tendency to wander off. And being in a forest, I only wanted to go in deeper.

I remember once the family was driving through some rolling forested hills somewhere. I had the window down and my head was almost sticking out of the car as I sucked in that precious forest air. I was snortin’ it.

But then suddenly the road we were on began descending and abruptly we wooshed right out of the forest. After all those trees we were now driving across a treeless lake-size sea of nothing but grass. What a trip that was! Better than any roller coaster.

The lake of grass was surrounded on all sides by forested hills. But all the trees were in the hills. The grass lake held only grass and a thin ribbon of highway running across it.

Then I looked over my mother’s shoulder out the front windshield of the car. There was some object way up ahead that was poking up from the sea alongside the highway. It was still far off but it looked a lot like a tree!

Excited, I stuck my head out of the window to look up ahead at the lone little tree growing in the middle of the grass lake. It was the only tree in the entire lake. It looked like it might be a juniper. It looked a little stunted and it had some areas of dead branches.

As we approached the tree I took a deep breath and exhaled it. Just as we passed the tree I shot a big ball of love at it and in the split second the tree and my eyes aligned I could FEEL the soul of the tree. That split second communion was intense.

With the tree in the rear-view mirror, I began wondering what it would be like to be a solitary tree living alongside a highway way out in the middle of a grass lake. Did the tree miss the fellowship of other trees? Was it lonely? But it had obviously lived its entire life in that one spot so it never experienced being close to other trees before so it would not know what it was missing.

When you are a tree in the middle of the forest it’s hard to have a good view. It’s because you are surrounded on all sides by other trees blocking your views. That lone rebel tree in the middle of the grass lake had unobstructed, panoramic 360 degrees views of the whole area. How incredibly cool is that?

Imagine the many decades of vibrant life that lone tree has witnessed. Imagine how many birds must have rested in that tree during its life. And what about all those cars that have passed the tree, day after day, year after year? Surely many of the families in those cars were oozing out interesting vibrations and stories. Surely there were more than a few kids who stared in wonder at the solitary tree, feeding it their love.

After many decades of tree-watching from a car, both as a youngster in the back seat and as an adult in the driver’s seat, I have seen many, many lone trees growing alongside a highway way out in the middle of nowhere. Whenever I see one I immediately slip into a state of wonderment and joy. My vibrations are immediately uplifted. The experience has a vibrational signature as intense as that of a FOREST. They are very different experiences but the vibrational frequencies of both are supreme.

So if I got to be a tree, would I want to be a tree in the forest or would I be a solitary tree growing alongside a highway out in the middle of nowhere? I have been grappling with this question my entire life. After so much thought put into it, I still cannot decide which tree I would want to be. I’m still trying to figure it out.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a humpback whale?
