“With age, comes wisdom. With travel, comes understanding.” — Sandra Lake

Abu Dhabi is the capital and the second-most populous city of the United Arab Emirates. It is known for its rich cultural heritage and diverse attractions.

During our family’s recent visit to the region, we had the pleasure of spending an entire day exploring this magnificent city, accompanied by an expert tour guide who suggested that we visit the magnificent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque stands as a magnificent example of Islamic architecture, seamlessly combining diverse styles with its impressive features, including 82 domes, over 1,000 columns, chandeliers adorned with 24-carat gold, and the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet.

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan commissioned this awe-inspiring structure, which serves as a symbol of peace, tolerance, and diversity, embodying a modern reference point for Islamic aesthetics.

Beyond its architectural splendor, the mosque also functions as a center for Islamic science and learning, embodying genuine values. Notably, its main prayer hall houses one of the world’s largest chandeliers, adding to the grandeur of this iconic landmark.

Our Visit

In spite of the intense heat, the mosque we explored proved to be a captivating spectacle. The journey to reach the mosque was a bit of an expedition. We had to park in the vicinity and traverse to the entrance, where a colossal, egg-shaped dome crafted from glass and steel commanded attention.

The interior beneath the dome was truly mesmerizing. Descending via escalators to the lower level, we discovered an underground mall housing a variety of shops, eateries, and boutiques. Negotiating security measures involving x-ray machines and metal detectors, we eventually arrived at the mosque.

On a clear and sunny day, the mosque radiated a remarkable brightness, showcasing stunning architecture. Designated areas for photography were marked, and visitors were required to dress appropriately, with the option to rent suitable clothing if necessary. Notably, keeping one’s shoes on was permitted.

The mosque’s interiors were a visual delight, featuring lavish marble inlay work and carpets intricately woven by Persian women. The exterior boasted a pristine white façade with gold accents, complemented by reflective pools and meticulously maintained landscapes.

The staff proved to be amiable and accommodating throughout our visit, and the historical information provided on informative signs added value to the experience.

Please enjoy the photos of this breathtaking Mosque.
