A Thoughtful & Easy Homemade Gift
People love a little Mason Jar light of holiday magic.
Christmas can be so complicated and I really want to simplify it — don’t you? I love to give gifts and decorate my home but I don’t need or want another new thing made in China. And so I find myself making more homemade gifts and decor that are simple, affordable and most importantly — thoughtful.
Besides — I don’t think the teacher in your life needs another coffee cup with an apple on it.
You can make this gift of light in 10 minutes and it is something that never fails to bring a smile to the person I give it to.
First, you need to find a Mason jar. Maybe you’re like me and you’ve got one kicking around the house. I have a vintage one with a glass top but don’t fret if you don’t. Any other clear jar with a lid will work.
You need a small set of mini-lights with batteries you can shut on/off. By the way — the little battery doo-dad is usually ugly as you can see the batteries. No worries. I covered mine with holiday sticky washi tape I got from a drugstore.

I used stuff I had in the house for my Christmas tree — I already had the jar so I just bought a set of mini-lights and stole some batteries from my husband’s desk.
I added a few sparkly snowflakes and a delicate silvery little garland I had — the key is to not overstuff it with things that block light. You want it to feel airy, glittery and hopeful.
Don’t add a big ribbon either — this is supposed to be simple, and cheerful and shine a little holiday magic.
I have my Mason jar light on my front entry table but I’ve moved it everywhere — to the dinner table as part of a centerpiece (by the way — 3 of them together are lovely ) and it sat on a cheeseboard last weekend and on Christmas Eve I think its last home will be on the bathroom counter. Hemingway had his moveable feast — I have my moveable Mason jar light.

It’s easy to clean and when the holidays are over you can easily store it as is — or separate the components and use the jar for another purpose — like maybe for some honey butter I’ve written about.
For whatever reason — this simple gift and/or centerpiece makes people ooh and ahh and they have big kid smiles on their faces.
And that’s all I really need to brighten my Christmas.
