A Thief Among Us

Jules interpretations of Poetry #1

Created in CANVA by the author

To be honest, struggling to understand the power and the language of Poetry haunted me. Marcus, my writing and editing mentor, gave me the challenge to “write a story or two a week about how reading someone else’s poetry affected you.”

Ravyne graciously provided a special place for my stories. So, without further ado, Welcome to jules interpretations of Poetry.

First up on the list is “Are You Fraught” by thief. One of the poets Marcus recommended.

Soccer punch straight to my heart in the first two lines

Are you fraught in constant thought And constant fears and who endears

Not only did this resonate with my perceived lack of understanding of Poetry, it also described the life I lived. Each line carried me to the next with a rhythmic dance in the ballroom of my thoughts. The last two lines seemingly healed the power punch and summed up the path my life followed until I found the courage to change my mindset, release the negativity of past demons, and move toward saying yes to my life.

In addition to reading others’ Poetry, I am teaching myself the foundations of Poetry such as the elements, structure, and purpose. Poetry can be difficult to understand and requires effort. In our fast-paced visual world, we prefer things to be easy, a scroll through social media and life without the efforts of digging deep into ourselves and others.

I am pleased to discover it the start of learning the language of Poetry just needed a new lens to look through. Thief’s poem gave me a new perspective of feeling the music and the rhythmic path his words lead me down.
