Summary

The poem "A Thanksgiving" by Celine Lai reflects on the transient and diverse nature of life's experiences, comparing them to sugar grains, and emphasizes the enduring power of love as humanity's greatest gift and task.

Abstract

The poem uses the imagery of sugar grains to explore the complexity of human emotions and experiences. It describes the sugar grains as delicate yet crisp, much like our hopes, dreams, troubles, and moments of despair. These granules, which can be clear and sharp or soft and white, symbolize the impermanence of life's moments, which can be easily brushed away or transformed with a fresh perspective. The author suggests that through perseverance and self-reflection, one can navigate through the challenges of life, represented by snowdrifts of negative emotions. Ultimately, the poem concludes with gratitude, acknowledging that the intangible and enduring love between individuals is the greatest task and gift bestowed upon humanity by the divine.

Tiny crystal shards of sugar

glisten on the page like fiery, white-white diamonds.

Far away scattered ones appear fluffy, snow-like.

So delicate, yet crisp, they lay there

until I gently captured a grain on the tip

of my finger to observe its lovely shape.

A cube, imperfect, it clung there

to the smooth skin of my finger.

Then with a simple, careless brush of my hand

it was gone

Our hopes, aspirations, dreams, our troubles and

moments of deepest despair are like sugar grains

Sometimes clear, sharp.

Not always perfect, but hesitant…..

sometimes soft and white, but always scattered.

One fresh sweep of our minds could

banish them forever and leave a clean white page

to write upon.

These thoughts, an attitude of mind

we have to find by striving — battling through snowdrifts

of self-doubt, anger, greed and despair.

Sometimes not knowing which landmark to look for.

And maybe among them there is a landmark

of which no substance can be found

for it is the intangible of the mind

A thing that will not dissolve easily

in the vanity of our tears

and likely

that bright star is the glow of love.

For I to love you and you to love me

is surely our greatest task and gift on Earth

and for this dear God we truly thank you.
