Summary

Gary Ridgway, the Green River Killer, is an American serial killer born in Utah, known for at least forty-nine confirmed murders, and is considered the most prolific serial killer in U.S. history.

Abstract

Gary Leon Ridgway, also known as the Green River Killer, is a 71-year-old convicted murderer with the highest known victim count in U.S. history. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1949, Ridgway was raised in Washington state, near SeaTac Airport, in a troubled household with a domineering mother and a father who disliked sex workers. Dyslexic and a poor student, Ridgway served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He married three times and was known to have an obsession with sex despite becoming religiously fanatical later in life. Ridgway's modus operandi involved murdering his victims, predominantly sex workers and runaways, and leaving their bodies along Route 99 in King County, Washington. He was arrested twice for prostitution-related charges in the 80s but passed a polygraph test in 1984 regarding the Green River killings. Eventually, DNA evidence linked him to the crimes, leading to his 2001 arrest. Ridgway confessed to the killings in a plea deal to avoid the death penalty, receiving forty-nine consecutive life sentences and an additional 480 years for tampering with evidence, effectively imprisoning him for the rest of his life.

Opinions

  • Ridgway's troubled childhood and learning difficulties are considered contributing factors to his eventual criminal behavior.
  • The mention of other notorious murders associated with Utah suggests a possible pattern of criminality linked to the region.
  • Ridgway's actions, particularly the targeting of vulnerable populations such as prostitutes and runaway teenagers, are condemned as particularly heinous and indicative of his predatory nature.
  • The longevity of his criminal activity, spanning decades, highlights the challenges law enforcement faces in apprehending serial killers, despite the advances in DNA technology and forensic science.
  • Ridgway's plea deal, which spared him the death penalty in exchange for providing information about his victims, is presented as a form of justice, though it acknowledges the contentious debate surrounding capital punishment.

He was sentenced to forty-nine life sentences and 480 years

An American serial killed named Gary Leon Ridgway is now seventy-one years old. He is known as the Green River Killer. With a total of forty-nine total convictions and possibly as many as eighty victims, he is considered to be the most prolific serial killer in United States history. He killed many women and teenage girls in the 1980s and 1990s. His victims were mostly in Washington, but he could have also killed some in Oregon. He was sentenced to multiple life sentences.

His victims were killed and the bodies placed along Route 99 in south King County, Washington. The young women were generally prostitutes or teenage runaways. He would bring them to his home and strangle them before leaving their bodies in remote wooded areas. The bodies of his first victims were found near the Green River. He was given the nickname of the Green River Killer after the bodies of the first five victims were found before his identity was known.

Ridgway was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on February 18, 1949. His family left Utah when he was eleven years old. He was raised in the State of Washington, near the SeaTac (Seattle and Tacoma) Airport. He was the second of three sons in the family with a domineering mother. It was a troubled home life. His father was a bus driver, and he would complain about the sex workers riding the bus. Ridgway is dyslexic and was a poor student. He was held back a year in high school. He joined the U.S. Navy after high school and was sent to Vietnam.

Utah has been connected to some very notorious murders.

When he was sixteen, Ridgway stabbed a six year old boy. This may have been his first attempt at murder. Ridgway had taken the boy into the woods and stabbed him. The boy survived.

Ridgway was married three times and had a son by his second wife. His wives and ex-girlfriends said he was obsessed with sex even though he became a religious fanatic. He often solicited services from sex workers. He was apparently committing some of the murders when he was married.

A task force was established to investigate the Green River killings. Ridgway was arrested in 1982 and 2001 on charges related to prostitution. He was a suspect in the Green River killings in 1983, but he passed a polygraph test in 1984. Hair and saliva samples were taken from Ridgway by the police in 1987. Later it was determined that his first confirmed kill was in 1973.

The samples were later used for a DNA analysis, which provided the evidence authorities needed to make an arrest. Ridgway was leaving the truck factory where he worked in Renton, Washington, on November 30, 2001, when he was arrested. The cases of four murdered women had been linked to him through DNA evidence. He agreed to tell the locations of some of his victims as part of a plea deal. He was spared the death penalty and received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

After Ridgway confessed to the killings, a King County Superior Court Judge sentenced Ridgway on December 18, 2003. He was given forty-eight life sentences with no possibility of parole plus one life sentence, to be served consecutively. He was also given an additional ten years for tampering with evidence for each case, which added 480 years to his forty-nine life sentences.

This is a genuinely evil man who got away with his murders for decades before he was finally caught. He is still living and is in a prison in Washington. Justice was served at long last.
