Synergy on the Side of a Mountain
A Tale of Atoms
A large group of Oxygen atoms wandered about on the side of a mountain, enjoying the view. One of the Oxygen atoms looked down to the valley below and noticed large herds of animals beginning to gather. They didn’t look too well.
“Look at those animals down there,” said the Oxygen atom. “I think they might need our help. We should go down there and see if there is anything we can do!”
“Yes,” said another Oxygen atom who noticed the herds. “We should go down and help.”
“Yes, yes,” said another. “They might need us.”
Soon all the Oxygen atoms shouted in agreement and nudged closer to the first Oxygen atom that had taken notice.
“Quickly!” the first Oxygen atom said. “Let us make our way down. No time to lose.”
The large group of Oxygen atoms began their journey down the mountain. It was hard going, and after a short while, they found themselves trapped in a long crevice.
“We are trapped!” shouted some of the Oxygen atoms. “We can neither move up, nor move down.”
“Oh, no!” lamented another. “We may be trapped here for eternity.”
They all turned to the first Oxygen atom, who only stared back — no answers forthcoming.
Suddenly, from just above the crevice, a single Hydrogen atom appeared.
“Thank the Author!” the first Oxygen atom exclaimed. “This is near serendipitous.”
“Hello,” said the Hydrogen atom from up above. “Do you need help?”
“Yes,” said the first Oxygen atom. “We were on our way down to help the animals in the valley below when we became trapped here.”
“My friends and I are also on our way down to offer help,” said the Hydrogen atom. “But we seem to keep rising back up to the top, against our will, but probably in our nature.”
“Then,” said the first Oxygen atom. “Perhaps we can work together to accomplish what we apart cannot.”
The two atoms nodded to each other in enthusiastic agreement.
“Reach down to me and help me up,” said the first Oxygen atom.
But the Hydrogen atom hesitated and said, “You are much bigger than me. I don’t think I can do it. Not alone anyway. Hold on. I have an idea!”
The Hydrogen atom quickly disappeared from view, and the Oxygen atoms traded looks of shock with one another.
“What will we do now?” some of the Oxygen atoms cried to the first.
But just then, the Hydrogen atom reappeared.
“I am back.” said the Hydrogen atom. “And I brought my friends.”
Just above the crevice a group of Hydrogen atoms entered into view, twice the size of the Oxygen group. The Oxygen atoms cheered.
“Along the line,” said the Hydrogen atom to his friends. “Spread out along the line of the crevice. Two Hydrogen atoms for every one Oxygen atom!”
The Hydrogen atoms spread themselves out along the massive crevice line.
“We are going to reach out to our new friends all at once.” said the Hydrogen atom. “As soon as you make contact, do not let go! Everyone understand?”
The Oxygen and Hydrogen atoms shouted and cheered while nodding their understanding.
“Ready?” asked the Hydrogen atom.
Ready.” Answered the Oxygen atom.
“Now!” shouted the Hydrogen atom.
The Hydrogen atoms reached down as the Oxygen atoms reached up, each of them stretched further than they had ever stretched before. Moment after moment until finally. . .contact!
There, on the side of the mountain, in a flash of synergy, the two groups transformed into water. Lots of water. Lots and lots of water.
“H2O!” the combined group shouted. “Molecules!”
The water began to travel down the side of the mountain, easily escaping every crevice, either flowing around or pushing through obstacle after obstacle. Even through great falls their bonds remained unbroken. They clustered together, formed together, and clung together. Nothing would stop them from reaching their goal.
The combined Oxygen and Hydrogen atoms gathered near the bottom of the mountain and then powered their way through the valley in the form of a giant river.
The atoms accomplished their goal, not apart, but together. And the herds of animals in the valley reached down at last, for the cool drink they always knew would come.
