“Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” — Gustave Flaubert

During our recent trip to Greece, we had the pleasure of hiring private tour guides to enhance our experience.

We were highly impressed by the outstanding service and professionalism of a particular guide in Mykonos. What stood out even more was that this guide was originally from Venice, Italy, adding an interesting perspective to our experience.

It was interesting to learn that being a tour guide in Greece is often a seasonal job. At the end of the tourist season, guides typically return to their home countries to either find other work or enjoy a well-deserved break.

Despite knowing that her time in Greece was temporary, our guide fully dedicated herself to ensuring our tour was memorable.

The tour company recognized the seasonal nature of the job and compensated her accordingly.

The tour company provided the tour guide with a comfortable apartment to stay in during her time in Mykonos, offering a home away from home.

It became apparent that our guide had a strong aversion to driving in Greece, and she openly shared her discomfort with us. She had attempted it once but found the experience unpleasant.

To alleviate any inconvenience, the tour company arranged for the young woman to have a dedicated driver who would transport her and our group.

This thoughtful arrangement allowed her to focus on providing an exceptional tour experience without the added stress of navigating the Greek roads.

She proudly informed us that she had no concerns about driving in Greece because her Greek boyfriend possessed his own vehicle as well.

During our conversations with our guide, she mentioned that her driver, who took care of transportation logistics, lived nearby and swam daily in the beautiful Aegean Sea.

We could imagine the refreshing joy he must have experienced, taking advantage of the stunning coastal environment while carrying out his responsibilities.

Our encounter with the Italian tour guide in Mykonos highlighted the dynamic nature of the tour guide profession in Greece. Despite its seasonal nature, these guides work passionately to create memorable experiences for tourists.

The tour company’s efforts to provide them with comfortable accommodations and support further demonstrated recognition and appreciation for their contributions.

It was evident that the tourism industry in Greece relies heavily on the dedication and expertise of these seasonal guides who bring their unique perspectives and knowledge to enrich visitors’ experiences.
