Abstract

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is the world's largest ballooning event, held annually in October. It spans nine days and transforms the skies into a vibrant tapestry of color with over 600 balloons. The event takes advantage of Albuquerque's ideal weather and geography, which creates the "Albuquerque Box" wind pattern, making it conducive for ballooning. Highlights include the Mass Ascension, where balloons launch in waves, and the Special Shapes Rodeo, featuring balloons in various whimsical forms. Evening Balloon Glows illuminate the night sky, followed by fireworks. The article also provides practical advice for attendees, such as checking the weather, using Park and Ride services, dressing appropriately, and being ready to take plenty of photos. How long has it been since you experienced a state of awe? Since you felt like a little kid, discovering a whole new world? Since you walked around with your mouth half open, muttering “Wow!”

If it’s been a while, book your next trip to The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in New Mexico. The largest ballooning event on earth, it’s long topped my personal bucket list. Having finally visited, I’m glad to report it didn’t disappoint!

The perfect location

For nine days each October, the Fiesta creates an enchanted world of vibrant balloon-filled skies, attracting nearly a million spectators.

Albuquerque’s mild fall weather and unique desert geography make it the perfect location for ballooning. The prevailing winds create the legendary “Albuquerque Box,” where winds blow in a squarish pattern — leading balloons right back to where they started.

But the most stunning aspect of the Fiesta is its sheer scale. The Balloon Park spans a whopping 365 acres— the size of 54 football fields. One-fourth of this acreage is dedicated to the Launch Field, where hundreds of magical (and often monster-sized) airships take flight.

Mass Ascension

The Fiesta’s most popular event is the Mass Ascension. This is when 600+ balloons launch within less than two hours. During this time, the Balloon Fiesta Park is the busiest airport in the world!

For the Mass Ascension, balloons lift off in waves. While pilots in one row are ascending, crews in other rows are inflating their balloons, while still others are laying out their fabric to begin setting up.

One of the coolest things about the Fiesta is you’re allowed to walk on the field and be “up close and personal” with the balloons, pilots, and crew. It’s magical to watch the crew inflate their colorful balloons and take flight into the desert sky, joining hundreds of other airy giants.

Special Shapes Rodeo

I was surprised to learn balloons aren’t always shaped like light bulbs. It was a lot of fun (not to mention, a bit trippy) to witness dozens of whimsical characters drifting into the sky — including cows, elephants, vampires, witches, Spiderman, Humpty Dumpty, a carousel, a stagecoach, and our favorite: a giant dog.

Balloon Glows

In the evenings, Balloon Glows light up the night like giant ornaments. It’s spectacular when all the burners are lit and the balloons blink in coordination. Prepare to be further blown away by the fireworks.

Know before you go

Attending the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta is fairly turnkey, but we discovered a few tricky challenges. Here are the lessons we learned:

  • Watch the weather — The high desert can be finicky. After we got up at the crack of dawn, arrived at the park, purchased our tickets, and found a seat, Fiesta officials raised the Red Flag — indicating cancellation due to possible rain showers. (As we later learned, festival officials are notoriously nervous when faced with a chance of rain, since yards and yards of wet balloon fabric are a royal pain for balloon crews to re-fold.) While we retained our tickets as a rain check for a later session, you can avoid the hassle by downloading a Fiesta app to get updates on the weather and possible cancellations.
  • Skip the self-parking — Festival officials recommend arriving by 4:30 am for the sunrise Mass Ascension and by 3:30 pm for the sunset Balloon Glow. With thousands of motorists competing for parking, consider taking a Park and Ride bus. Pickups are available from several remote lots.
  • Pack a few essentials—Albuquerque is high desert country, so it can be hot mid-day and cool in the morning and evening. Bring a jacket, dress in layers, slather on some sunscreen, don comfy walking shoes, and strap on a backpack…so you can more easily tote the souvenirs you’ll undoubtedly want to buy.
  • Prepare to snap a lot of photos — Balloon Fiesta is one of the most photographed events in the world. You’ll want to bring your camera (and perhaps a portable charger, since your phone battery will be working overtime).

If you plan to visit

In 2023, the fiesta will be held Oct. 7–15. See the Official Albuquerque Guest Guide here, or the Balloon Fiesta site here.

In addition to the Fiesta, you’ll want to enjoy the beautiful city of Albuquerque, one of the country’s oldest and most unique cities. While locals delight in calling their town “Albu-quirky,” we appreciated its beautiful historic churches, its rich Native American culture, and its amazing green chili.

Sadly, after a few days, we had to return to the adult “real world.” But the magical, childlike enchantment and wonder of the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta will always remain in our memories.
