Side hustle is the new or current name for part-time jobs or income. Many online business opportunities are recommended as side hustles. Whether they work or not is questionable.
She mentioned her own career as a full-time content creator. She has found success to the point of earning around $8K per month while only working 10–15 hours per week. She obviously performs work for the money, but spending that few hours and earning that much money is very impressive.
Unlike many people who write about earnings on Medium, she did not indicate how much of her earnings come from Medium.
Many writers on Medium recommend side hustles as a way to earn passive income. The five ways to supposedly earn passive income which she says to avoid are:
Trying to write and sell an e-book.
Trying to sell stock content like photos or music.
Trying to sell a digital course.
Trying to invest in real estate.
Trying to make money with affiliate marketing
Although she does use some of the above ways to earn money, she says it is NOT passive income. It is a lot of work in those ventures and seldom do they become a way to receive passive income. They require constant effort.
Those methods are touted as effective side hustles by many people who are sharing articles on Medium. They say that people can earn money by doing those side hustles. They may recommend ways to earn income without saying if the methods have worked for them. It may work for some, but it is not likely to produce passive income.
Learning from others about their experiences and expertise is one of the benefits of Medium.
Writing for Medium is often for many an outlet that they enjoy. Although the pay may be less than minimum wage unless the writer gets really lucky and successful, there is hope that it will eventually pay off. Although some small amount might be made passively on older articles, it will require constant effort to make it really pay.
Some people are doing it and earning substantial money. It can obviously be done.
