A Strange Hazy Sky

Reflections on the smoke from the Canadian wild fires

The skies of the eastern coast of the United States have looked a little peculiar lately. A strange haze has been filling the skies all thanks to smoke drifting south from wildfires up in Canada.

The wildfires started in Quebec, Canada. A dangerous and unusually dry season has been responsible for feeding fuel to these uncontrollable wildfires. Because of these raging wildfires, millions of acres of forest and homes have been lost, forcing people living in the affected areas to evacuate.

Because of the smoke from the wildfires, the air quality has been very poor and unhealthy, and even more so for those with health risks. I am from southern Pennsylvania, and I can only imagine what the skies and air quality is like further north.

New York City, for instance, had extremely bad air quality as of Wednesday, June 7, and I'm sure the immediate surrounding areas weren't any better.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., and Columbus, Ohio, are just some of the other surrounding areas that have also been affected by the smoke from the Canadian wildfires.

It should be noted that wildfires themselves are not unusual in Canada. It is the intensity and the widespread damage of these wildfires that have been unusual.

While in no uncertain terms, devastating, the smoke from the Canadian wildfires is also a perfect example of how sometimes beauty can be found in the most negative circumstances.

Amongst the dangerous hazy smokey skies, one was able to see a rather peculiar yet breathtakingly beautiful sun in the daytime and an equally breathtaking and beautiful moon at night.

It's amazing how these wildfires as far away as Canada can have such an impact hundreds and hundreds of miles away.

The good news is that the smoke will lift and blow away from the United States thanks to changing winds.

Good. Because, like many, I am ready to enjoy the bright warm sunshine again.
