A Stop at the Wilmington, Vermont Flea Market Yields a Jackpot of Mets Baseball Cards

Volume 10-Our Summer Vacation Was So Much Fun! We Spent the Final Night in Keene, New Hampshire

View From Hogback Mountain, Vermont/Author Photo

Welcome back. Home again! It’s been a great summer vacation trip. This is the 10th and final article regarding our trip. However, I probably will do a few follow-up articles posting extra photos and some photos from our birding boat tour.

After leaving St. Andrews by the Sea on Friday, August 4th, we drove to Keene, New Hampshire, about halfway home. We have stayed here before. A nice town. We drove through a few storms on the way from St. Andrews. Overall, the weather on our trip was outstanding, with only a few nights of rain and a quick shower here and there. At this point, we were pretty much done exploring and sightseeing. Just a resting place on the way home.

Wilmington, Vermont-One Final Stop

On Saturday, the 5th, we headed for home. It seemed like forever since we were home. Our trip was one day short of 2 weeks. We headed across New Hampshire and into Vermont. We decided to take this route home since it is very scenic compared to the Massachusetts Turnpike that we took on the way to Maine. Once in Vermont, we stopped at a couple of spots. The first was Hogback Mountain, not far West of Wilmington.

At an elevation of just over 2400 feet, the views are great. It once was home to a well-known ski area that operated from 1946 to 1986.

After a brief stop, we headed down the mountain to Wilmington, which is home to a well-known flea market. This has been operating for many years and my in-laws used to sell crafts here for quite a few years. Since the weather was good, we decided to stop for an hour or so.

As you may know, I collect baseball cards, especially New York Mets. Back in February, I wrote an article on this:

This past winter I started working on my collection again for the first time in quite a few years. Retirement has given me the time once again to resume this hobby. I ordered cards from eBay, a wonderful source for card collectors. My goal is to have cards from every season of the Mets; their first season was in 1962. At this point, I only lack 4 or 5 years.

I Hit The Jackpot

As luck would have it, I found a vendor who had a large amount of Mets cards. I was in heaven. He was originally from Queens, NY, and is an avid Mets fan. The cards he was selling were “extras”. His personal collection must be huge!

Just a Few of the Cards I Bought/Author Photo

I ended up buying about 70 cards. He had a lot more. I definitely added some nice cards to my collection. Sometimes it's hard to remember which cards I already have, but most times I remember when I look at a card whether or not I have it.

I hope you enjoyed my 10-part series on our summer vacation trip. As I mentioned, I will probably write a few follow-up articles. I can't believe I wrote 10 articles. I never planned this at all. It just happened. I am fortunate that my wife does the driving; she doesn’t like to ride since she gets car sick. So I wrote most (the first 9) of these articles in the car, finishing them in the hotel rooms at night. Every one using my iPhone. It definitely takes patience. It feels good to be writing this one with my laptop and wireless keyboard.

Until next time.
