How to Kickoff Your Writing Career with the Right Publications

I think I came out of the phase through a rough journey. Learned a lot of things in a real-time experience.

I am willing to share a few tips and a bunch of practical ways to avoid the few struggles that I did at the early beginning as a newbie in the writing world. I want you not to go through the path of which was completely off-track driving as a new writer.

But, to be honest I did not have to struggle too much like other beginners I saw. From day zero, I started to connect with writers whose writings I was following and Editors of a few publications whose contents I read the majority of the time before starting dedicated writing by myself.

Just After opening an account on Medium:

First of all, I will recommend you write a good Bio in the About Section of your Medium Account. Try to add all your social media links, like — FB, Linkedin, Instagram, Twitter, and so on with your Medium.

On the reverse, keep sharing your writing on different platforms with your connections from day one.

Experiment with your writing skills:

Write a couple of articles for one fortnight at least with self-publication. Yes! you heard me right!

Don’t just start submitting your work to publishers right away after creating your first draft.

After writing a couple of articles, like 10 to 20. you will start to feel that you are getting the grip gradually. Even. it’s slow that’s fine! Don’t Push yourself very hard. Writting is not a cakewalk that can be mugged up overnight.

Chatgpt is getting smart it’s writing by different prompts day to day. Our brain also works in the same way. It gets smart by writing more and more and always being open to feedback from your readers if someone is giving you any suggestions related to writing. Just grab it and keep notes to improve for your next article.

Come on! We ain’t the Sons or Daughters of Tony Stark. Embrace your mistakes and learn from them. It’s absolutely fine to make mistakes. try to avoid being demotivated by your mistakes.

How to get yourself added to publications:

I had gone through tons of content on Youtube by top writers and influencers; when I was starting my journey. But, never seen anyone talking or displaying how to get yourself added as a writer to publications or exactly how you should reach out to them as a beginner writer.

Note: I am selecting this publication just to show you how to be added. You can select any publications of your choice.

Step 1: Go to any publications’ page and click on the Publications name directly by clicking on it.

Step 2: Join as a writer.

After landing on the page of any publication you will always get some sort of options like: “Add me as a writer”, “Submit your writing”, “Join as a writer” or “Onboard me” and so on,

Step 3: Now you have come to the end phase of submitting your work or to be added as a writer to the publication. you may find any form to fill up with your details or email address t share your interest in their publications. The medium does not have any own page or form to fill up and submit.

My suggestion to all writers who are just jumping right now into this world. Make your cold email and DM ready with an extremely polite tone and some sort of excitement with some of your already published works. Then, start reaching out to them to be added as a writer.

Finding Publications automated way:

Just open the Microsoft Edge browser. Then search “New Bing”. You will land here. Now, select the “Creative mode”.

Choosing the Right Publications as a new writer:

This is a big deal for every new writer. Few tips below:

Choose the publications; that will help you to grow. Don’t select publishers based on followers.

As, a new writer you should choose publications, Editors who will help you to grow and both of you share the same philosophy, mindset, and pace of publishing.

After, reaching out to tons of publications, you will surely be added as a writer to their list.

My personal suggestion to you is to prioritize those publishers when you are publishing based on a few features of Editors. Ask yourself these questions yourself while you are filtering while you are choosing Publications Editors :

• Are they proactive enough to respond to you on your submission?
• Are they providing you with feedback or suggestions if they are rejecting your work?
• Is your article matching the genre of the publisher to which you are submitting?

Yes! I believe in the above philosophy. One day, in the future even if I will reach 1 million followers on my Medium account. Though I will keep listening to critics and will try to understand their psychology to upgrade my skills and perception every day. I will always be open to any feedback then as well.

The majority of the Publishers, prefer to get drafted copies from your end.

But, I had seen this happen with many of my friends whose drafted copy was stolen by Publishers and published after fine Paraphrasing them by their editors.

Yes! you heard me right! This thing happens as well.

what’s the solution?

Always submit your bronze standard drafted copy or already published copy to them to showcase your work for the first time only and keep the gold standard on another hand for later submission once you are added.

Avoid Motitizations from day one:

As, a new writer. It’s always better to treat your co-writers and editors as your family member and we don’t take money from our family members.

Avoid affiliation links, sponsorship links, course selling links and so on which helps to monetize from the beginning.

Let, your readers know What kind of Element you are! let, yourself flourish through your creativity first.

Try, to connect with your followers, other writers whose writings are helping you learn to write better, and most importantly, try to connect with different editors of different publishers; where you are publishing your works.

Long story, short, expand your network as much as possible.
