PAPER POETRY PROMPT#2| FAMILY
A Stamp in Time
Stamped Envelopes — photo my own
Over distance and years family drifted
Addressed envelope with a stamp gifted
Smile and a chuckle at my misspelt name
It matters not; the heart is the game
A stamp of a truck representing fifty years
Hard work and many changes of gears
Together through the ups and downs
Millions of miles over concrete grounds
Helping farmers reap what they sowed
From farm to market via the road
Amazing how much a stamp represents
Collection of countless background events
Thankful to gain a glittering glimpse
Into the lives of extended family links
All stemmed from a shared surname
A stamp and a prompt lighting the flame
The pictured stamped envelope was a gift from my Uncle and Aunty at a family reunion a couple of weeks back.
I missed the chat, my girls wanting to explore left me distracted. My father gave it to me just this week.
It led me to a website and this YouTube clip.
Amazing what you find out about family when you aren’t distracted.
While I knew the gist of their trucking business, I didn’t grasp the extent it had grown today.
My Dad was conscripted into the army just before his brother Frank and Father started.
Distance-growing families-business-military service-time. Things change.
If you don’t check in beyond a hug and kiss, wow, how quickly you can miss out on 50 years of stories!
Grateful to be up to a little more up to speed. Smiling from the example of what persistence and passion can build — together as a family unit.
Whilst I do hope agriculture practices change to follow a regenerative system, I can appreciate the amount of hard work and support the trucking industry has given farmers over the years, and will continue to do so for years to come.
Especially here in Western Australia where the distances are vast between towns.

Thanks to Suntonu Bhadra, Mia Verita and Gloria D. Gonsalves for this week’s prompt of Stamps — what are the chances it would be the same week I was gifted one? It led me somewhere totally unexpected. Love how this works!
