A software engineer’s view of pandemic
From the working environment setting to a software engineer’s view of pandemic.
With my daughter’s new monitor delivered, I have 3 monitors sitting back on my desk. I feel embraced by loved ones again. During shower time, I realize that I really love sitting in front of my monitors and computers. The shallow light from screens and the buzzing yellow coming from my lap construct a warm and welcome embracing arms to swallow me in. I could sit on my chair for hours without resting, as long as my lower back does not protest. Brain and fingers working together to type on the mechanical keyboards, with the Cherry MX blue’s sweet clicking sounds and soft piano music from the combination of Lang Lang and Bose speaker. The environment could not be more welcome.
With fingers moving on my keyboard, my thoughts and ideas keep coming out from my spirits and pour into the computer monitors around. Every enter key pressed represents a piece of myself extracted and formalized as digital electrical signals flowing into another corner of the world. Every line of code I commit to repo might contribute a little to change the world to be a better place.
The Internet empowers regular people like me to hide at home but still contribute. The Internet enables everyone willing to work hard to keep finding the self-evaluation during the pandemic. The Internet lets everyone to learn the most advanced technology freely and flexible with low-cost and high relevance. The Internet offers the most elegant entertainment that could keep encouraging regular people to be more productive.
During the pandemic, lots of people are suffering big time. Some of them are losing their loved ones. Health workers need to suffer the most high-pressure work on earth. First responders need to take the risk of getting infected to help others. Even the NFL players are taking the chance to offer the highest level of competitive sports to entertain the mass population. Utility workers maintain the important utility infrastructure to ensure all people could have basic life supplies, no matter storm or blizzard. Compared to them, we, as high tech workers, could safely and comfortably stay at home to enjoy all the services and protection they are offering.
Our job is not easy. To maintain our services, we need to stay overnight to fix site issues. Scratching heads and losing hairs are side effects of debugging. Shouting cloud and pounding tables are natural expressions of blocked on optimizing. To provide the best service and lower costs, every software engineer burns themselves to fuel the forever running vivid internet. So, I do not feel cheap, even compared with any other workers in this pandemic period. But I do feel lucky because we are enjoying this safe and comfortable working environment.
We should always contribute more back to our community. Even though we still have work, many people in the community are suffering. Small businesses are struggling. Servants/sales are laid off everywhere. If possible, we should support them by donating to support our local community groups, such as the swimming club, dancing school, painting gallery. Buy food from local restaurants/community super-market — shop appliance from the local store. Even a small thank you letter to your kids’ teacher could warm an isolated hard-working heart and bring a wonderful day to other people.
Pandemic will pass. The world will be different. But I hope that the world would still be a one full of kindness and warm smiles when we come out of the houses. Let’s all do our share to make the hope come true.
