Mini Memoir
A Single Sentence Story about a Dog
When Monroe the Westie went on vacation

Surprised to learn that Monroe had never been on vacation in her not-quite-sixteen years of life, I suggested that she come with us to the ocean, where she surprised us on the first night by going into a trot and not letting up until her front paws touched the place where the tide just reached, thin white edges of waves gently meeting the fuzzy white feet which traveled along the beach for such a long time that Monroe snoozed all night once she got back to the cabin and made herself a bed out of Marisa’s t-shirt, recharging for the next day when she joined us for lunch, our cooler and a driftwood log holding our blanket down in the wind as we watched a vendor unfurl a series of colorful kites across the sky and ate our sandwiches (and dog treats), then walked to the water’s edge and back, a little more slowly this time, with Marisa carrying Monroe the last few yards back to the car.

P.S. Monroe celebrated her 16th birthday yesterday, August 1, with a special dog treat which said “Happy Birthday” in dog-safe icing. Our ocean vacation was in June.
P.P.S. When I posted the challenge for writers to share a poem or short prose piece composed of only one sentence, my original post included a single-sentence poem of mine — and since then, I’ve been meaning to write and share my own single-sentence short nonfiction story. So here it is at last, and I hope you enjoyed it!
If you want to share your own response to the challenge, there’s no deadline, and you can post on your own page or in a publication of your choosing. It really is fun, and I hope to read more of your poems/stories. If you tag me, I’ll come and read your post. :)
