A Simple Technique To Embody The Power and Confidence Of A Master Martial Artist

Photo by Thao LEE on Unsplash

In Aikido, the Japanese martial art, there is a principle of “One Point” that can be used to relieve stress and boost confidence dramatically.

I once witnessed the power of this when an Aikido master literally became immovable as three men twice his size tried to push him off his base stance. As he kept telling them to push harder, it was like he was made of concrete. They couldn’t lift him or even get him to blink.

How on earth did he do this?

The simple answer: when we move our attention to the very center of our body, we become physically and psychologically stronger.

This is the power of “One Point.”

In Japanese, this point is known as the “Hara” — referring to the central storage point for your chi or life force energy.

Some of the benefits of connecting with this point in your body are:

  • Alleviating anxiety and stress for potentially difficult situations.
  • Mentally rehearsing performing at your best.
  • Bolstering confidence and recentering your mind.

The “One Point” Recentering Exercise

Here’s a quick exercise you can do at any time to tap into your “One Point.”

  1. Stand up straight.
  2. Locate your “One Point” about an inch below your navel. Try lining up your thumb across your navel.
  3. Optionally, you can also visualize a ball of energy radiating from that spot.
  4. Think of something that stresses you.
  5. Rate the discomfort on a scale from 1 to 10.
  6. Focus your full attention on your “one point.” Think of this as moving the tension from your head to your stomach.
  7. If someone is nearby, have them gently push you on the shoulder. How hard is it for them to move you? You’ll know that you’re locked in on your “One Point” because it will be tough for them to push you off balance.
  8. As you keep focusing on “One Point,” rate your discomfort again from 1 to 10.
  9. Keep repeating until the number significantly reduces.

Who knew becoming an immovable force was this easy?

Next time, you find yourself dwelling on something that stresses you, move your attention away from your head to the very core of your being and see what happens.

You are a Conscious Creator of your reality!
