A short introduction

New and exciting beginnings

I am sitting on my desk staring at the blank screen. Being reminded of how hard it is for me to talk about myself.

OK, here goes nothing:

Your typical short bio

My name is Yannis, and I am almost 28 years young. I live and work in the Netherlands. Waking up early, working out, then working as an information security consultant, following the typical 9–5 (if I’m lucky) schedule. After that, if I am in the right mood, I write.

Sometimes I write in between tasks or during lunch breaks, but please don’t tell my boss! Anyway..

I consider myself a new writer, with lots and lots to learn. I am consistently writing on Medium for about a month, while I maintain Nous Universalis, a blog reflecting what I am passionate writing about: taking everyday life experiences and elevating them to something greater, trying to find their hidden meaning, and ultimately help people gain a different perspective. I do know this is vague, and I feel my blog is going through an identity crisis. Perhaps I am tagging along with it, I’m not sure yet.

In Medium, I like the freedom and flexibility bestowed upon Medium writers so much that I am (hopefully)staying here for a while. While I am working on my professional career and blog, I still think Medium has something novel to offer. It’s been a positive experience thus far!

I am an INTJ (most of the time) so I like to look inwards for answers, and enjoy some alone time a lot. I like a healthy dose of self-deprecation and music puns to lighten (or darken) the mood! Apart from writing, I like reading, playing my guitar, having fun with my parrots, enjoying a walk with my girlfriend next to the canals, working out and watching YouTube. Oh, and I cannot live without coffee (you probably empathize with this one)!

A shining light

I stumbled upon Illumination when I first created my Medium account. Unsurprisingly, so many of the stories I read resonated with me deeply. It wasn’t just their content, but also the fact that they are written by people who care to share experiences, oftentimes profound and enlightening.

Needless to say, I was hooked.

Then, at some point, I started reading the community stories and the comments around the impact and inclusiveness of the publication. I was considering joining one, as I would like to experience that sense of community. All the “How to succeed on Medium” videos, stories and blog posts suggested joining a publication, so I guess their creators know better?!

In any case I waited a bit, as I often do, to try to formulate as good an opinion as possible before sending that request to Dr Mehmet Yildiz. I read some more stories, and witnessed how the publication receives praise for being open, honest and welcoming.

I pressed “Submit” yesterday. The rest is history!

A part of something special

I am excited to officially be part of the Illumination community. It radiates positivity, solidarity and support, and those come from all members I have come across so far.

To be honest, that’s what I was looking for. Of course, you can go solo, but there’s so much more to experience and learn with others around.

I am more than happy to contribute and support as much as I can, and be an active part of this amazing group!

Lastly, I’m not a fan of social media (I was forced to create profiles on most of them for my blog), but here’s where you can find me:

I ask you to tolerate my lack of experience, the amount of questions coming your way, as well as my rare but low-quality jokes!

Take care, stay safe, and thank you!
