Summary

T.K. McDonald, a passionate writer, shares her journey and growth after completing the 100 Story Challenge, which has significantly improved her writing and storytelling abilities.

Abstract

T.K. McDonald, also known as Tamila, embarked on the 100 Story Challenge and emerged as a winner, showcasing her dedication to writing since childhood. The challenge, which involved writing a story every day for 100 days, each at least 100 words long, reignited her passion for storytelling. McDonald credits her mother's question, "Why did you stop writing?" for inspiring her to take on the challenge. Throughout the process, she discovered new depths in her storytelling, surprised herself with the characters and plots that emerged, and learned to convey more with fewer words. McDonald's favorite story from the challenge is "Clowns Go Round and Round," and she also appreciated community stories like Paul Mansfield's "The All Knowing Eye" and Zane Dickens' "Here’s To The Crazy Ones." Post-challenge, she is working on a streaming service show featuring 100 episodes based on her flash fiction stories. The 100 Story Challenge has grown to over 1300 stories and continues to inspire writers to develop a daily writing habit.

Opinions

  • Tamila found the challenge both difficult and satisfying, particularly enjoying the surprise of where her stories would lead.

💯 Story Challenge

A Short Interview with 100 Story Challenge Winner T.K. McDonald 🏆

The first in our interviews with the persistent and passionate writers who have managed to finish the 100 Story Challenge.

Tamila was one of the first to dive into the 100 Story Challenge and her stories were from the beginning fresh and different.

Fiction is her genre and she’s been writing since the 3rd grade.

But writing, as it often does for many of us, fell by the way side until a simple question by her mother reignited it again:

“Why did you stop writing?”

Why did you take the 100 story challenge on?

I wanted to push myself and see where my story telling could take me.

I also wanted to improve my writing and this was the perfect way to do that. I’ve improved so much and I want to share my improvements with the world.

My storytelling has taken me to places I could only dream of. I’ve told stories that I didn’t know that I had in me.

I love that.

What did you enjoy most about the challenge?

I enjoyed writing the stories and having no idea what the stories would tell me about myself or even what they would be about.

The characters and stories even surprised me.

What did you find hard about the challenge?

Just writing on a daily basis, even when I was tired. This was also the most satisfying part.

What was your biggest takeaway from the challenge?

That when I put my mind to it, I can do anything.

I also thought, “Wow, I’m a pretty good writer.”

Did your writing change at all over the challenge, and if so, how?

I think it got better. I learned how to say a lot with fewer words. Concise stories with profound emotional impact became my goal.

Which of your 100 stories is your favourite?

My favourite story is Clowns Go Round and Round.

Any community stories you particularly enjoyed?

Paul Mansfield’s The All Knowing Eye

Zane DickensHere’s To The Crazy Ones

The writing just speaks to me as the misfit, the crazy one that’s not so crazy.

What projects are keeping you busy now?

I am currently working on a show for a streaming service. Shhhh! I can’t say which one. It will be 100 episodes, chosen from the best 100 flash fiction stories that I’ve written on Medium.

Very intriguing, we’ll definitely be checking in with Tamila about that in future.
