A Shadow Inside
Poetry — Spiritual Weekly Prompt
People call me a beacon They say I shine brightly Always sharing joy No darkness can drown me But what they forget is That each light casts a shadow The brighter the light shines The stronger the shadow But they seem not to notice They just see this prism of light While I feel the shadow Growing bigger inside One day it might break me And swallow my light Until then I keep smiling Shining into the night
Depression is a real problem, often swallowing those who seem healthy and happy on the outside. A favorite singer of mine, Chester Bennington, took his own life on July 20, 2017. He appeared to spend a joyful time with his family just hours earlier. Not even his wife or kids had any clue about the depression that devoured him from within.
If you know someone who might suffer from depression, don’t mistake their outside happiness for a sign that everything is alright. Because often it’s not. Be there for them, talk to them and if required, help them getting help.
This poem is my answer to the spiritual weekly prompt by Simran Kankas. Thank you for letting me take part in this.
Since I used this to talk about something serious and important, I will skip my usual self-promotion about other stuff. Focus on someone who really needs you instead. Thank you.
