A Senseless Murder Of An Innocent Young Couple In Utah
Three small children are left
They were unlikely victims to be murdered
It happened in April 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic was becoming a huge problem. Businesses had closed, and people were staying home. There was a senseless murder of a young, religious couple in a small city fifteen miles south of Salt Lake City, Utah. They were apparently awakened from their sleep in a home invasion. They were robbed and then killed.
The news covered stories of the horrific case where the victims were described as being Christ-like, kind, happy, and loving parents. They were attacked and killed as their three young children were sleeping. The children were all under the age of four with the youngest just six months old. The children were unharmed.
The police were called to the home just after 1:00 am on a Saturday morning. Someone in the neighborhood called the police after hearing what sounded like gunshots and a woman screaming. When the police arrived, they found a male deceased in the backyard. He had been shot. They saw signs of forced entry and entered the home where they found a woman who had received a gunshot wound as well.
After an investigation, the police had identified a suspect in the killings. He was not found for some time, but his wife was arrested. She said he had returned home that early morning with bloody clothes and a stab wound. He had told her that his life was over. She disposed of the clothing he wore and cleaned up the blood. He left the home and was not immediately located.
The suspect was eventually caught in California and brought back to Utah where he was convicted of the murders. On October 2, he received a sentence of life in prison without parole.
The young couple owned a landscaping business. The man who killed them had once applied for a job with them. He lived not far away. He had gone to the home and robbed them of money and cell phones. He wore a mask and then went to his car. He found that he did not have his car key so he returned to the home without his mask. He was apparently recognized, and a fight ensured where he was stabbed. He killed the young couple before leaving.
At his sentencing, the killer said, “I’m so sorry for your sister, your brother, their kids. That’s not really my character. … I’m so sorry. I apologize.”
He showed remorse, but he had taken the lives of two innocent people and ruined the lives of many more who loved them.
A Go-Fund-Me page was set up for the family to care for the young children. The last name of the couple is Butterfield.
