Summary

A young couple in Utah was senselessly murdered in their home during a robbery in April 2020, leaving behind three small children.

Abstract

In a tragic incident that shook a small Utah community, a young couple was brutally murdered in their home in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The victims, known for their kindness and devotion to their faith, were attacked in a home invasion where they were robbed of money and cell phones, and subsequently killed, while their three young children slept unharmed. The police were alerted by neighborhood gunshots and a woman's screams, leading to the discovery of the male victim in the backyard and the female victim inside the home, both having suffered gunshot wounds. The suspect, who had previously applied for a job with the couple's landscaping business, was apprehended in California after his wife disclosed his return home with bloody clothes and a stab wound, and he was later sentenced to life in prison without parole. The killer expressed remorse at his sentencing, but the crime had already irrevocably impacted the lives of the victims' families and the community.

Opinions

  • The victims were portrayed as exceptionally kind and loving individuals, likened to being "Christ-like."
  • The crime was described as particularly heinous due to the victims' innocence and the fact that it occurred during a global crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The suspect's actions were seen as senseless and brutal, especially considering he had sought employment with the victims in the past.
  • The community's response was one of deep sorrow and support, as evidenced by the establishment of a Go-Fund-Me page to care for the couple's children.
  • The killer's apology at the sentencing was viewed with skepticism, given the severity of his actions and the irreparable harm caused to the victims' family and children.

They were unlikely victims to be murdered

It happened in April 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic was becoming a huge problem. Businesses had closed, and people were staying home. There was a senseless murder of a young, religious couple in a small city fifteen miles south of Salt Lake City, Utah. They were apparently awakened from their sleep in a home invasion. They were robbed and then killed.

The news covered stories of the horrific case where the victims were described as being Christ-like, kind, happy, and loving parents. They were attacked and killed as their three young children were sleeping. The children were all under the age of four with the youngest just six months old. The children were unharmed.

The police were called to the home just after 1:00 am on a Saturday morning. Someone in the neighborhood called the police after hearing what sounded like gunshots and a woman screaming. When the police arrived, they found a male deceased in the backyard. He had been shot. They saw signs of forced entry and entered the home where they found a woman who had received a gunshot wound as well.

After an investigation, the police had identified a suspect in the killings. He was not found for some time, but his wife was arrested. She said he had returned home that early morning with bloody clothes and a stab wound. He had told her that his life was over. She disposed of the clothing he wore and cleaned up the blood. He left the home and was not immediately located.

The suspect was eventually caught in California and brought back to Utah where he was convicted of the murders. On October 2, he received a sentence of life in prison without parole.

The young couple owned a landscaping business. The man who killed them had once applied for a job with them. He lived not far away. He had gone to the home and robbed them of money and cell phones. He wore a mask and then went to his car. He found that he did not have his car key so he returned to the home without his mask. He was apparently recognized, and a fight ensured where he was stabbed. He killed the young couple before leaving.

At his sentencing, the killer said, “I’m so sorry for your sister, your brother, their kids. That’s not really my character. … I’m so sorry. I apologize.”

He showed remorse, but he had taken the lives of two innocent people and ruined the lives of many more who loved them.

A Go-Fund-Me page was set up for the family to care for the young children. The last name of the couple is Butterfield.
