A Self-Care State of Mind

A haiku — June writing prompt

Self-care state of mind; We must nourish to flourish Invest in ourselves.

Self-care goes beyond bubble baths and manicures, above date nights and happy hours, and extends farther than massages, wine, or hot chocolate. Self-care nourishes us; it breathes new life into us, energizing and rejuvenating our very being. What is self-care to you?

To me, sometimes self-care is journaling, running, or yoga, and other times it’s eating the cake and sometimes it’s eating the salad instead! Sometimes, self-care is setting boundaries with ourselves and others, being self-disciplined, or meeting ourselves with kindness and compassion.

Self-care is doing and not doing.

It’s saying more yes to us and more no to others. It’s saying more yes to what makes us feel alive, and more no to what drains us. It’s listening to and attentioning ourselves.

Self-care is not selfish; it is loving, caring, and necessary. It makes us better not just for ourselves, but for others too. Self-care makes me a more attentive mother, a more rested employee, a more rejuvenated student, a more present writer, and a more peaceful and aware me.

Self-care is self-love.

How do you practice it and honor your own care?

This month, tell us what self-care means to you. How do you invest in yourself? How do you nourish to flourish? How does honoring your self-care make a difference in your life?

How do you indulge in your own self-care?

I indulge in wine, chocolate, writing, nature walks, nature photography, long drives with loud music and windows down, running, yoga, dancing in the kitchen, honoring my word to myself, a good book, and homemade cappuccinos in fancy mugs — to name a few! I invite you to join me.
