A Scene that Made Me Cry
Thank you, Jane the Virgin
In this scene, Jane talks about the moment where she realized what she would say to Michael as part of her wedding vows.
After an unexpected night of ruined bachelorette and bachelor parties (Jane’s mom ruining Jane’s and Jane’s dad ruining Michael’s), they finally come together and have a joint party at the Marbello. In this scene, they’re sitting together after the party.
The Boundary Crossing Mother

Throughout this episode, Jane had to set boundaries with her mom, with her mom being the main agent of chaos in Jane’s carefully organized night:
- Her mom organizes a stripper to show up at her office, but the stripper shows up at her presentation to parents and students, stripping naked in front of a lecture hall full of prospective students.
- When Jane finally begged the professor to not take away all of her Teaching Assistantships as a way for this disgression, her mom accidentally leaves a drunken voicemail to this professor, on her phone, describing this man in the vilest terms, especially after he had actually decided that Jane’s track record was good enough to let her continue teaching.
- Then finally, just when Jane’s best friend Lina’s beau showed up to pick her up, Jane and Lina step out of the venue to find that Lina’s beau was making out with Jane’s mom.
It’s honestly wild. Jane is described as a “control freak”, passionate about organization. I related to deeply to that characterization throughout. But this scene, where she finally lashes out at her mom, she finally shares that the reason she’s such a control freak is because her mom is so out of control.
This resonated.
It takes great characterization for someone to realize their own personality traits might be grounded in something deeper in history. For someone to see themselves in a character and realize, through their thoughts and dialogue, why we as a viewer feel this way.
That’s powerful.
The Touching Scene

What really touched my heart was what happened after all of this chaos, the resolution. Jane sharing that her wedding vows, her feelings, her relationship with Michael comes down to feeling safe when she is around him. She shares that typically, she’s the one imposing structure and making sure that others around her are doing well; that she can’t relax when she’s with others.
But with Michael, she can, because he’s there to watch over, support her when she needs it. That she truly feels safe with him.
And that… that was when I teared up a bit. Knowing that some fictional character out there was able to have this history of developing this coping strategy of planning every small detail in her life in order to manage the chaos — that she found love, respect, support, and protection from someone who respects her boundaries.
Final Words
I can’t believe I haven’t seen this tv show earlier, with its amazing characterization, phenomenal and twisting plot. Can’t wait to share more about this!
Lucy (The Egg Girl) LOVES Jane the Virgin and will likely be quite sad when this tv show comes to an end. You can rectify this by recommending her more beautiful written comedy or comedy-adjacent shows in her ongoing TV show list.
