EXPAT/MEMOIR

A Scary Situation on the Paris Metro

How our survival instincts got us out of harm’s way

It was the early 2000s. My husband, toddler son, and I were living as American expats in Paris.

My husband and I had just finished dinner at a cozy Persian restaurant on a cold winter night. Our son was safe and sound at home with his babysitter.

We were making our way back to our apartment in central Paris, using the metro as our mode of transportation.

As we entered the train station, we noticed it was empty and eerily quiet.

We quickly realized that we were the only ones there.

As we walked through the station, we noticed an older gentleman standing in the shadows. He was bundled up in a winter coat and beret.

He had a strange look on his face and was staring at us intently.

Suddenly, without warning, the man began to run toward us, laughing maniacally. My husband and I were caught off guard and didn’t know what to do. So, we both started running in the opposite direction.

My heart was racing as we stumbled through the empty station, trying to put as much distance between us and the crazy man as possible.

Being pregnant with our second child only added to the stress.

Running while carrying a baby was not something I would recommend.

I still remember the cold air hitting my face as we ran.

My husband and I didn’t stop running until we finally reached the safety of a crowded train car.

We were both out of breath and shaken by the experience.

As the train pulled away from the station, we looked at each other in relief.

We were thankful we had made it out of the train station unharmed.

Tenor.

Closing Thoughts and Takeaway

Looking back, we still don’t know the man’s intentions or why he was chasing us.

All we know is that it was a terrifying experience that left a lasting impression on us.

The takeaway from this story is that in any big city, it’s always important to be aware of your surroundings and to trust your instincts.

Have you had any scary experiences on the metro in any city? Please leave your thoughts in the comments.
