A Sanity Saving Tip for Families Who Travel
The birth of the go-bags
Three years ago, we flew from Australia to the UK for my younger sister’s wedding.
No big deal, right?! Maybe, not normally. But we flew over with a three-year- old and a 15-month-old. Even now years later I can feel my anxiety rising just thinking about it!
We knew it was going to take a lot of thought and preparation to keep them occupied for the whole flight (about 24 hours of travel time all up). And so, the go-bags were born!
What are the go-bags?
They are a super simple concept….just a bag full of things to distract the kiddos!
For this long-haul flight we took a trip to Kmart (one of my all-time fav places to visit). We bought five drawstring bags, and a whole heap of little toys and games. The idea was to rotate through each bag over the course of the flight in the hopes it would keep the kids (especially our son) interested.
The 5 go-bags.
Bag 1:
Airplanes.
Bag 2:
Dinosaurs and other animals.
Bag 3:
Hot Wheels and tape that looks like a road.
Bag 4:
Colouring books, pencils and crayons.
Bag 5:
Spinning tops, card games, puzzles and books.
Did they work on the long-haul flight?
They worked super well for our three- year-old son (when he wasn’t watching the same five episodes of Paw Patrol 🤣). They didn’t work so well with Miss 15-month-old. She wanted to crawl up and down the plane…even tried climbing the stairs to first class quite a few times.
Thankfully we timed it so the majority of the flight was overnight and they nodded off…for a few hours anyway.
How to incorporate the go-bags into everyday life.
We now use these ALL THE TIME!
Although we mix it up, especially now the kids are getting older.
We have family throughout regional Victoria that we visit regularly and packing a go-bag is essential to surviving these trips with our sanity intact!
The kids are responsible for packing their own go-bags now, with their favourite toys and games. As long as it fits into the one bag.
Times you can use the go-bag.
Here’s a handy list of places and times you can utilise the go-bags (we certainly do):
- Going out for dinner, lunch, or brunch.
- When we visit family or friends for a meal.
- Meetings or adult occasions like school meetings.
- Appointments (doctors, dentists, haircuts, etc.).
- Camping trips.
- Long car trips.
- Holidays.
I can honestly say that these go-bags have saved us from tantrums, headaches and stress. We have even been able to enjoy hot meals uninterrupted on occasion!
What will you put in your go-bags?
