It was July 2020, when Covid-19 was freaking out the entire world and there was lockdown in place everywhere.
Streets, grounds, markets most of them were barren.
People were looking to try a new mix of their lives. They were exploring their talents while remaining at home in lockdown. The most impressive talent to find was to know what is happening in e-commerce.
E-commerce giants earned billions of $ during this pandemic. But they were not the only ones who got the benefit, there are many more.
I’m one of the people who improved their skills and diversify their income sources. I earned my 1st $ working online during the last year.
In the beginning, I was a non-paid member of the Medium and was never able to figure out the potential of the forum. I wasn’t a paid member, I wasn’t a regular reader, and I wasn’t a writer completely.
Time was on everyone’s side in the lockdown. There was time to read and improve skills, which intelligent people took the benefit. I was lucky that I got myself interested in e-commerce.
I tried to figure out the algorithms of the few like;
- Medium
- Fiverr
- Upwork
- Youtube
- and the list goes on and on
I found that Medium was the one that could be worth a shot before any other of them. So here I’m almost a year after writing these lines expressing my journey at this prestigious forum.
My First Story Was Like a Kindergarten
I along with my family, was in lockdown, there was no physical activity for my children inside the house and they were always busy watching the TV screens or the mobile phones. I was quite concerned about their eyes having too much screen exposure.
It was bothering for me to look into the eyes of my children and answer their questions about the pandemic. The kids didn’t even know the meaning of a virus. They were locked down in their own home like never before.
There comes the first draft from my pen on July 23, 2020, without knowing anything about the Medium or the publications. I wrote the article and hit the publish button as the system guided me.
Here you go: my story was live and the excitement of the moment can’t be explained.
This story got me my first online viewership & online earning. It allowed me to send my words and thoughts to the world, having hundreds of thousands of readers.
My first story earned $1.14 till now, and I can’t share my happiness about it.
My First Curation
After publishing my first story on Medium, I got interested to read more about the forum and heard about the lucky charm “curation”. People were jumping around being curated and there were few shedding tears to be in the “curation jail,” which seemed to be a myth.
There was no surety of curation by submitting the article in bulk.
I was trying to publish articles in search of curation to find the volumes of readership on Medium. Like others, I started to write my articles to get through the curation editors and become the winner. But it wasn’t the case to get through the curation standards.
Here is the summary of one of my articles;

- Another big publication rejected my story on 25–08–2020

- My Story was CURATED by Medium on 27–08–2020.
It didn’t take me more than I expected. It was my 8th story, and boom — I got the magic email from the Medium editors, that my story was curated. What a feeling it was, I'm still cherishing the feeling as it was only my first and the last curated article as Medium changed the process later.
This story got me 392 views, 129 read, and earning of $12.68 — it was great to earn through writing only.
Highest Performing Article
While writing at the Medium, you’ll experience different kinds of happenings. Articles will be doing differently than what you would be thinking of them to do. Don't panic, leave it, go ahead.
I had written a few articles, in personal development and about self. I loved to talk about the subject.
Yet, my best performing article was about the earning on Medium. It was about my first month's journey on Medium and people loved it to most of my articles.
This article gave me 397 views, 243 reads, and a whopping $17.68. 07 hours and 40 minutes of reading time (insane for me, that people have read my words for this much time.)
It was a great win for me to earn this much from an article telling what I’ve done in my last month.
It wasn't written with a purpose to earn. I wanted to pass on the knowledge to newcomers, telling them what they should expect of the forum.
Distribution Instead of Curation
Medium has changed its process of curation into distribution, which seems to be less competitive and less effective for the writers.
It seems that Medium has lowered the criteria for the assessment, and the same is the case with the distribution of the article as well.
A few of my articles were part of the “distributed list’ list as well.
Money-Money
As I said earlier, Medium is the one place that has allowed me to earn my first $ online. I’m still in pursuit of the success I was hoping for. I was able to yield $ 76.17 for the period between July 2020 to June 2021.
It doesn't look promising but asks me, it does.
It's the income I’ve earned by sitting on my couch or the chair in the home. I don't have to go outside to earn this income. And finally, it has been so close to my heart.
I wasn't punctual through the year to write on the Medium, as my average story per month is 2. I’ve published only 24 stories, making a yield per story at $3, which is fine to me. There were few completely dry months where I couldn't even produce a single story.

After spending a year on the Medium, I’ve my takeaways to share with anyone willing to read.
Success Will Not Come Automatically
You won’t meet success merely signing in and hitting the keyboard aimlessly. You’ve to aim it right and look for the proper working that should help you. You have to come up with something good that will help the readers and forum. You must give to the readers to allow you the entrance.
Quality Matters More Than the Quantity
If you produce only meaningless articles in bulk, you won't be finding any readers or fans to reads your stories. You won’t be winning because the main theme of the Medium is based on the read time.
On the contrary few writers write very few articles, but with proper research and use all the resources to nail the article and get the thumping response of the readers.
Topics to Write
Writers (Sinem Günel, Holly Jahangiri, Tom Handy)hold mixed opinions about what one has to write on Medium.
Most people love to stick to one niche and like to give value to their readers in a regular shape.
Other people think that it has to be a lively forum where they could jump from one niche to another. Both of the ways have their advantages and disadvantages and both have winners and losers in them.
