A Recent Study Suggests $500,000 Annually for a Happy Life in America

Yes, Americans put a new price tag on happiness

Recently, I read a piece talking about the cost of happiness in the US. A few years back, it was claimed that people needed to make at least $75,000 annually in order to be content and happy.

This number was seen as the ‘sweet spot’ — beyond this figure, money itself could not buy more happiness. That study was conducted in 2010, not too long ago.

But recently, the amount of money someone needs to make annually to be happy in America drastically increased.

Now, it’s a whopping $500k per year.

So what happened in 2023 that you need almost 6 times more to be happy in America?

The Business Insider cites:

According to the survey, inflation, high interest rates, and student loans are weighing on Americans’ financial security, and having the comfort to spend money on everyday items can boost the feeling of financial happiness. For example, 62% of millennials said they would be willing to pay $7 for a daily coffee “because of the joy it brings.”

If I’m understanding this correctly, do you really need half a million dollars to cover the essentials and have some pocket change for everyday expenses?

You’re not even talking about extravagant luxuries like cruises, private jets, or yachts!

That’s surprisingly crazy.

With the amount of money I have here in Spain, I can easily live like royalty for a minimum of 15 years, that’s not just one, but an entire decade and a half!

I just wrote an article about What it means to be Rich in Spain, and if my calculations are correct, it would take at least $300k in the US to accomplish the same financial activities. That is according to the US calculator.

In Spain, $30k is enough to maintain my luxurious lifestyle. But in the United States inflation is ten times higher, so I would need to make 10 times that amount here to replicate my current quality of life.

Can you believe the difference?

Making $300k, I am not even talking about $500k a year is extremely difficult even with 2 incomes and full-time jobs.

Last time I checked annual salary for an RN in CA is $73k and that is CA, in other States is less.

My verdict is I could never be happy in the US even working 2 jobs.

I could never afford the life, I love to live.

Let me tell you, it is much simpler to earn an income of $30k per year anywhere in the world than to make $500k.

No wonder everyone in America is always stressed out about money.

If you need half a million to be happy then for me that isn’t life worth living.

It is a nightmare.

As I sat back in my rocking chair, staring out the window at the village lights just lightening up, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of absurdity.

The idea that happiness was tied to such an absurdly high price tag was disheartening.

I already chased the elusive “American Dream” that promised success, prosperity, and happiness a few years ago.

But as I sat there, crunching the numbers and trying to make sense of it all, it seemed like that dream was nothing but a cruel joke.

I couldn’t believe, I was one of those people who spent their entire adult lives chasing wealth, sacrificing everything in the pursuit of happiness that could never truly be bought.

To me, that was a hollow existence, devoid of any real meaning or purpose.

But then again, maybe I was just being naïve. Maybe there was more to it than just money. Maybe, just maybe, there was something deeper to be found in the American experience.

For two decades, I searched for the deeper meaning of life in America. The more I sought it, the further I was pulled into a seemingly dark and bottomless rabbit hole.

Living like this meant I had no time or money to enjoy my life.

So what was the purpose of it all?

So, I packed my luggage, left America, and discovered a place where I could be content even with an annual income of $30k: Spain.

I am telling you it is simpler to travel across the Atlantic and settle down in Spain or any safe country than to try to figure out how to attain the new hefty American price tag of $500,000 to be happy or even $300k back then (in 2018 when I left) was too high a price to pay.
