A Realistic Morning Routine (That Won’t Ruin Your Life)

And you can *actually* do

Photo by Jordan Whitfield on Unsplash

I’ve read my fair share of morning routine articles.

There are even entire books dedicated to the topic of what you do in the first few hours of waking. Who’d thought there was sooo much to say?

For a long time, I thought the answer to my problems was simple:

  • Wake up
  • 5km run
  • Cold shower
  • Green smoothie
  • 30 minutes of reading
  • 20 minutes of meditation
  • Drink 500ml of water (with lemon)

If I could manage that every day, for the next… well, forever, all my problems would be solved.

You can guess how it turned out.

Here’s the morning routine that has stood the test of time (and actually helped me grow as a person):

Don’t rush to wake up (I know, it’s controversial)

I used to aim to jump out of bed.

The alarm clock went off. I wanted to spring out of bed like my bouncing spaniels and rush off to the first item of the day. I tried that for a while…

I felt like a pile of mush by 9 am.

I started necking 6 cups of coffee a day and then realized I probably just needed to get some more sleep and ease myself into the day.

Today, I wake up slowly. I’m not racing. It's more like I’m warming up for the day. I don’t jump out of bed; I wake slowly.

I go downstairs, open my laptop, drink some water, and slowly ease myself into the day. It’s not a jolt into reality to get as much work done as physically possible.

Nope, it’s calm. It’s relaxing. It’s warm water on a cold day — it’s much nicer that way.

Dress to un-impress

It’s 6:22 am. I’m in my PJs, sitting at the kitchen table in pitch-black darkness, tapping away on the internet.

It’s not always been like this.

I thought I needed to ‘dress for the day’, to be productive. Turns out, that’s BS. I tried it but realized I just needed to be comfy (I always have more to say when I feel relaxed and cozy).

I found writing in my comfy clothes is kinda warming in the morning. The thought of sitting here in jeans or suit pants makes me laugh. Who’s doing that at 6 am, seriously?

I’ll tell you who isn’t…me.

The anti-workout

I’m renovating a house, working full-time, and running a business on the internet. My cup is full. I plan on sorting out my life a little more when I (finally) move into my house but until then (don’t worry it’s weeks away wooohooo), all the movement I get in a day is walking my doggos.

I know, shocking. Call the fitness police.

I tried the whole getting up early and working out for an hour thing, not for me. Really, it’s not.

I know, I know people say you need discipline and to move your body, and honestly, it’s on my to-do list, but just not right now.

I did have some mild success with running a few times a week, so I will likely go back to that soon (and perhaps throw a bit of yoga in there for good measure).

But for now, I’m okay with walking my doggos (plus ripping down ceilings and demolishing a house is practically a workout, right?)

Trying to ram my morning routine full of exercise and anything else distracts from the realism of my life. I’m never going to be a ‘wake up and work out’ kinda person.

I’m just not.

I am a light run at 5 pm kinda person or a bike ride with my dogs kinda person, so I’ll optimize for that.

No mindful minutes

It’s very infrequent that I stop in the middle of the morning, breathe in and think about life.

Most of the time, if I do that, I’ll contemplate getting back in bed for too long.

I do (however) think about life 24/7, so maybe that’s how I meditate, but meditation has just never been for me. I’ve tried it, I just fall asleep, which feels counterintuitive to the whole morning routine thing.

I’ve tried the apps, the journalling, everything.

It doesn’t work.

I’m not saying not ever. I’m just saying right now, in my life, it doesn’t work.

And I’m okay with that.

Keep it super simple

My morning routine couldn’t be any simpler.

It’s wake up, write my to-do list, and get on with it. I’m not journalling, meditating, or taking a cold shower (how do people do that?). I’m waking up, figuring out what’s important, and getting on with it.

That’s about as complicated as I like it.

I’m acutely aware that I tend to fool myself often. In my head, I love the idea of a fully-fledged morning routine with all the bells and whistles. But the reality? I’m tired, it’s usually cold, and I’m trying to boot my brain into gear at 6 am.

It’s unlikely that I’ll manage any more than getting up and writing.

And in all honesty, that’s all I want to do anyway.
