A Programmer’s Poem
The Joy of Vague Error Messages

There we go now, this should be fine I just pasted in the last couple lines Now — to parse the data from the API And write the JSON output to a file And save it on I: (the shared drive) This is taking a while…what?! It won’t compile? But I copied straight from Stack Exchange! (Though the code looked long, and a little strange) So, what’s wrong this time, what have I broken? Did I skip double quotes or a semi-colon? Did I ensure the denominator’s not NaN? Did I check for null operators, or is it another thing? Bad strings? Perhaps flawed, illogical syntax? A min that ought to be max? A mixup with lost inheritance? A slip, an undefined soft reference? An unassigned or unmapped variable? A wrong sign? Something more terrible? Am I missing a bracket, a statement, a constant? Help! This is tragic! I’m getting despondent! Hey! I spotted the problem — it’s the indentation My job description for the past hour — frustration Maddening! This wasted time sans — that useful information Imagine! This code crime could have been prevented, honestly If I’d only done my job with passion and indented…properly The compiler would have had no pretext to object If I wasn’t so tired and hadn’t gone And left those lines… Flush left
