Summary

An elderly man named PopPop teaches his three sons the value of consistency and focus by outperforming them in a watercress cutting task through steady work without rushing, emphasizing the importance of knowing what you're doing and doing it well rather than trying to compete or win.

Abstract

The narrative recounts a day where PopPop and his three sons go out to cut watercress. The sons are confident they will outpace their father, starting quickly and energetically. However, PopPop remains unhurried, methodically setting up and cutting without concern for speed. Despite the initial lead by the sons, PopPop's pile of cut watercress matches theirs by the end of the day. This story serves as a metaphor for leadership and productivity, suggesting that true success comes from a deep understanding of one's tasks, a steady pace, and a focus on the work itself rather than competition. The author, Larry Nowicki, uses this anecdote to encourage readers to emulate PopPop's approach to become leaders in their fields, gain respect, and be seen as role models who get things done. Slow and steady

PopPop and his 3 sons head out in the morning to cut watercress.

Boys figured they’re going to beat him today. They would out-cut him today.

When they would get to beds PopPop would be the last to walk in. The boys would be rushing around quickly at first. They rush to set up their baskets and start cutting.

Pop Pop would just walk out and start cutting. He never counted. He never rushed. He didn’t care how long it took. He had it to do and he would get done when he got done.

He kept his pace. He knew what to do and did it. He would talk if he had to or wanted to. He just kept going and did what he did.

At first, the boys would be a little ahead but when it came time to count everything and pack it the pile that Pop Pop had was just as big as the pile of the three boys.

In the long run, they didn’t win. They didn’t beat him. They didn’t get more done.

What was his secret? He wasn’t trying to win.

He knew what he was doing. He knew what he had to do. He did it. Slow and Steady!

So what does this have to do with you? If you want to be a leader in your field. If you want to be respected. If you want to be someone that others look up to. If you want to be known as someone who gets things done. If you want others to look at you as a role model.

Pay attention to PopPop. Know what you’re doing Know what you have to do. If you don’t know what to do find out…then do it. Don’t try to win. It’s not a game.

Just be you and Stay Steady.

It’s the way to get things done.
