A Poem My Son wrote

Diamonds

Me and my son playing Uno when I lived at the hospital. You could see the bald spot in his head from the surgery.

Jazz, my 13-year-old son had brain surgery in 2018. He is perfectly fine now.

This is a line in his rap he made up:)

“Sure that is fact

but not

everything in your life

has to be about that”

What I got out of Jazz’s poem was:

Never be a victim to your circumstances; Your attitude about your experience, whatever that is…is your responsibility.

I think that my son is wise…what if we saw all of our traumas in this light?

Sitting on the bench with my son, my response to his poem would be:

Your pain can be the ball and chain

that mentally enslaves you

or it can be

what sets you free

More From Me

Even though my white husband got beat up by a group of black men…he doesn’t see himself as a victim…My newest story:

A bit about my son’s brain surgery but mostly how I see life:

Your attitude about your experience, whatever that is…is your responsibility:

A story I told my kids and best friend while driving to school:
