A Poem for My Wife on Our 32nd Anniversary

A selfie of the author and his wife at Logan Airport, Boston.

A pretty Chinese girl with her Chinese mom in tow

We glanced at one another and it changed the status quo

Our lives seem not to happen as we plan or we expect

Sometimes you just accept life out of faith and due respect

Things pan out picture perfect like you’d wished upon a star

And just what you had longed for becomes just the way things are

Just what you had dreamed of stands there right in front of you

And all that you’d imagined once has suddenly come true

Well maybe not so suddenly but in a little while

You find yourself all cozy in a warm familiar smile

That’s had your number all the years the two of you’ve been mates —

Even longer when you factor in all those prenuptial dates —

And you realize that your marriage years now number thirty-two

Impossible to fathom how it still could feel so new

But that is how it strikes me now my dearest darling wife

My soulmate and my best friend for three decades of my life

Here’s to yet another loving and fulfilling year I feel us now approaching yet a higher closeness gear

It’s happened every now and then throughout our married past

I wish that I could slow time down so it didn’t go so fast
