A Pleasant Evening Around Rice Lake, Capturing Nature and Life in a Framed Canvas

A weekday getaway story

Beautiful Rice Lake. Image: Suntonu Bhadra.

Last week on Tuesday, after a tiring workday, Nibedita (my equal half/partner/wife/don’t know how to be politically correct these days) told me that let’s go outside for a drive. So I proposed to go for a long drive to a place where I went before in winter but couldn’t explore much.

And I bribed her with the dinner date.

‘Agreed!’ — she said.

We rolled onto our chariot and headed towards Rice Lake.

Rice Lake

The lake is located in south-eastern Ontario (south of Peterborough city, and the Kawartha Lakes, and to the north of Cobourg).

The lake is approximately 28 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide; and is a part of the Trent-Severn Waterway, built in the 19th century (so it is not a natural lake).

Rice Lake is named after the wild rice once grown in this area by the native people. But unfortunately, the area was wiped out when the artificial lake was built. So the local people call it Pemadashdakota, the “lake of the burning plains.”

This is an excellent place for fishing, boating, paddling, hiking, cycling, bird watching, ice-fishing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. Hence, the area is a great gateway spot, just 90 minutes east of Toronto.

We went to the Bewdley village, which is on the south-western bank of Rice Lake. There are a few other spectacular sides around the area, which will give us another chance to explore the site again.

I also went there during the winter of 2021. I saw the lake wholly frozen and indeed had a spectacular view.

Once we reached there, we saw people fishing at the lakeside. Quiet, no disturbance of traffic, just the local ambiance (and us, of course). The kids were enjoying the community park amenities.

The locals gathered in the restaurant and park to chat and enjoy Lakeview. People enjoyed the boat rides on the lakeside, and some went deep into the lake for fishing.

No, we didn’t create much of a nuance. We secluded in a corner, and I took out my drone to capture some aerial snaps. The flight time was short, as we saw birds circling the drone, and we were concerned about the safety of those curious birds.

We had our dinner at Rhino’s Roadhouse. We had a pleasant time with good food and the beautiful lakeside view.

And before coming back, we saw the sun was setting in the west. Finally, the last rays of the sun touched us and asked, ‘How was your day?’

Without the visit, I would have said, ‘Tiring!’ But after the trip, my heart uttered, ‘Awesome, thank you, life!’
