The Flower Lady

Chennai is an ancient city that is an amalgam of modern and traditional Indian culture. I visited Chennai last year along with my Maharashtrian friend. She couldn’t understand why I would jump at the sight of a flower vendor and grab one mogra bud garland on our early morning walks to the beach. Here women can skip a meal, but they will buy a mogra garland for their hair. They walk with grace on the streets wearing their silk sarees, nose pins, and wearing flower garlands on their big hair buns.

When I visited it was the season of purple Jasmines and this beautiful lady is making a garland!
