A Part of Me Dies When I Watch a Kevin Spacey Movie and Still Enjoy it.

Should we separate the art from the offenses?

Should we separate the art from the offenses?

If we did this, we would probably have nothing left to enjoy. Talented people often have their demons…

I always assumed Kevin Spacey was a cracking actor. He always plays a dark character, a bit of a creep.

What I didn’t realize is that he was just playing a version of himself. What amazing casting. Recent allegations suggest he didn’t even have to act too hard in his roles.

Spacey has been accused of sexual misconduct by multiple men, including actor Anthony Rapp, who alleged that Spacey made unwanted sexual advances toward him when Rapp was 14 and Spacey was 26.

After these allegations surfaced, Spacey took this opportunity to come out as gay as some kind of distraction. No one cares about your sexuality. We care if you’re an abuser though.

It is hard to deny, at best, that he is a bit of a creep. But it is also hard to deny his talent as an actor. I watched The Usual Suspect and LA Confidential recently. Both were great films and his acting was sublime.

Does it matter whether or not he is a dirty perv? Should we just forget about everything else and just enjoy the work as a separate entity?

These are hard questions to answer. If we were to take the moral high ground here, then surely we should do the same with all other pieces of art?

We will be scrutinizing movies, music, and paintings nonstop as many greats have had their controversies.

Frank Sinatra had Mafia affiliations. But he also had the voice of an angel.

Rold Dahl was accused of being a racist. But his children's books have stood the test of time.

MJ had an unhealthy relationship with underage boys. But the man is arguably the greatest performer of all time.

Harvey Weinstein has produced some of the greatest movies of all time. But he has also had several sexual assault claims against him.

Louis CK exposed himself to women. But he’s a funny dude.

Picasso was a misogynic pig. But his paintings were literally works of art.

The list goes on.

And on.

And on.

You can probably find dirt on anyone who has done something great throughout history. It actually makes me not want to research my heroes anymore, as I will probably uncover something that makes me respect them less.

If we decide to boycott work because someone associated with it has done something unforgivable, we may not have much left.

But at the same time, there is a part of me that still feels guilty when I consume something and still enjoy it, despite knowing of the producer's unsavory behavior.

One thing we can do is to stop putting these people on a pedestal. You can respect the work they do, but we do not have to make them feel like they can get away with anything. They are humans after all and all have their flaws. These flaws have been magnified with a celebrity status that has made them feel untouchable. Just look at Will Smith.

Although I don’t think Will has done anything anywhere near as bad as some of these people, it shows how celebrating celebrities can have an adverse effect.

We can still enjoy great work and talent, but no one should feel untouchable and everyone should be held accountable for their actions.
