A Note to Parents to Be

“You’ll never have the peace of mind you once had.”

A dear friend of mine — a mother of two boys — once said this to me when she heard that my wife and I were having our first baby. She got excited for me and said a bunch of other stuff.

But what stuck with me was this: “you’ll never have the peace of mind you once had. They [your kids] will always be in the back of your mind.”

As a father of a 17-month old baby girl, I now see what she meant and I couldn’t agree more.

Unless you have kids, you will never know the feeling I am talking about.

No matter how much you love you have for other kids in your family. Whether it’s your niece, nephew, or cousin — it’s not the same as being a parent.

There is this whole new world of emotions that opens up as soon as your baby enters this world.

It is mind-blowing!

It is like opening a new part of your brain, that you never knew you had.

There is SO MUCH love and excitement.

There is SO MUCH happiness and joy with everything about your children. (Okay, maybe not the tantrums.)

There is a special feeling of uncertainty — you won’t know what you’re doing half the time.

And there is this worry and concern for their wellbeing.

If they get sick, you get worried sick about them.

Their happiness is your ultimate goal.

Everything you now do affects THEM.

You think of ways to earn more, so you can provide more.

In everything you do, they’re on your mind.

So yes, you won’t have the same peace of mind you had.

But you will have so much love, happiness, passion, and excitement, that makes it all worth it.

Congratulations! You are a parent to be. Your life will change — for the better.

Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!
