Summary

The content discusses how ordinary, law-abiding individuals can become criminals due to a single poor decision or external influences, such as emotional reactions to social issues or political events.

Abstract

The article emphasizes that even those who have led peaceful, lawful lives can be transformed into criminals by a solitary wrong choice. It illustrates this point with examples such as individuals who committed crimes during the protests against racism and police brutality following George Floyd's death, and the Trump supporters who participated in the U.S. Capitol insurrection on January 6, 2021. The text also distinguishes between these individuals and career criminals, who have a long history of criminal activity. It underscores the tragic nature of otherwise honest citizens facing prison for a momentary lapse in judgment and advises constant vigilance to avoid criminal behavior.

It can be from just one wrong choice

Sometimes that unfortunate decision turns bad

People can live normal, peaceful lives without any run-ins with the law, but then something can happen in an instant to change all that. A wrong choice can turn someone into a criminal.

The racism and police brutality which seem to have caused the death of George Floyd brought out strong reactions from many people. There were protests held in most major cities in the United States. There were people of all races who wanted to show that they were against racism, so they joined the demonstrations. Some of the protests turned violent, with criminal acts being committed as emotions ran high. People were arrested and charged with crimes as a result. It was the first arrest for many of them.

After Donald Trump contested the election of Joe Biden and insisted that the election was a fraud, his MAGA followers rallied in Washington, D.C. on January 6, 2021. After listening to Trump’s words, some of those people stormed the U.S. Capitol and illegally entered the building. They caused damage, destruction, and death. These people who were mostly supposedly law-abiding citizens became criminals in that insurrection. Over 400 have now been arrested by law enforcement. Trump accepts no blame in the incident.

There are a large number of people who are called career criminals who have had a lifetime of crime. They may have started out young and spent time in and out of prison for the many wrong choices they made. They may be currently serving time in prison.

It is unfortunate when a regular, normally honest and law-abiding citizen finds himself in prison because of one wrong choice made in the heat of the moment. That has happened to many people who now are labeled as criminals.

There are many other ways that people can get into trouble with the law for a single infraction that should not have happened.

It is wise to be ever vigilant and avoid actions that could result in criminal activity.
