FUTURE WRITERS

A Millenials’ View of the New World

The impact of the global pandemic on the next generation

Photo by Adetayo Adepoju on Unsplash

Every now and then we stumble across a piece of work that inspires us, an article that opens our mind.

Yesterday I read one such article.

Six months ago, my daughter Taylor wrote a piece that I only discovered this week. I was in awe reading her words. Very impressed indeed, and immensely proud of course.

The comment on Taylor’s article reflects my own thoughts:

Firstly, excuse me a moment while I pick my jaw up off the floor. Secondly, wow! What a fantastically articulated piece of writing. This first offering leaves me on the edge of my proverbial seat awaiting the many installments to follow. Get to it.

The article I refer to describes a day in the life of a millennial as the global pandemic unfolded in Ireland.

Life in Ireland

The title of Taylor’s piece is simply Life in Ireland in 2020. Allow me to share the opening paragraph with you:

I was flying through delicate strokes of cloud, painted onto a royal blue picturesque sky. I was marveling at the awe-inspiring views when I was suddenly, and rudely, awakened by a relentless guttural cry. I patted the surrounding sheets in a desperate attempt to snooze for just five more minutes. It was too late, I had landed. I gingerly opened my eyes and reluctantly peeled back the duvet. A cool breeze cut through my pajama bottoms and I couldn’t help but grimace.

Downstairs, the kitchen had an unnerving atmosphere as the morning news reverberated around the tiled walls. “Covid-19” “seven new cases confirmed in the Republic of Ireland” I rushed to the sink before leaving for school and allowed my hands to linger in the soapy warmth for longer than usual. I had found a pronounced comfort in the intense lavender aroma in recent days.

Taylor Farrell Myers — Author of Life in Ireland in 2020

If you’re hungry for more I’d highly recommend reading the entire piece on Taylor’s profile here.

Publication Support

To demonstrate the power of our community for the next generation I’d be much obliged if you, my fellow ILLUMINATION and ILLUMINATION-Curated editors — Tree, Brian E. Dr Ron, Dr Michael, Dr John, Karen, Joe, Dipti, Kevin, Kate, Arthur G. Bill, Michael, Aurora, René, Geetika, Ahmed, Britni, Selma, Earnest, Dew, B. A., Lanu, Lynn, Agnes, EP, CR, The Maverick Files, Sumera, Liam, Tony, Neha, Thewriteyard, Desiree, Stuart, Dr Mehmet Yildiz and Ntathu— could offer guidance and support to an emerging writer. Your expertise is welcome.

Education

Last month Taylor started her undergrad at Trinity College, Dublin, majoring in Psychology. The same university where another Irish writer, Brian Pennie, lectures while pursuing his PhD in Neuroscience. So over the coming months, we may get to read about the latest research in Psychology, from a millennials’ perspective, should Taylor choose to share her work.

Writers

To my fellow writers, George, Sinem, Danny, Sean, Suzanne, Julia, Terry, Chris, Timothy, Nicole and Kathryn, I invite you to do likewise by offering guidance and support. Your experience is vast, a treasure trove of knowledge for new writers, so don't be shy in sharing your wisdom.

Final Thoughts

Experienced writers know that promotion is vital to attract and engage an audience. The best way to grow readership online is through channel exposure, channel diversity, regardless of source.

“Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day.” — Sally Koch

Today writers must embrace multi-channel promotion, but How can experienced writers support newbies?

One idea is a succession planning space, a dedicated spotlight in every publication for articles written by millennials for the next-generation, or indeed any generation — What do you think?
