POETRY | PROMPTED RESPONSE
A Memory And A Dream
Prose poetry
And there you are on the verge of memory. Lounging in laughter. Your green eyes sparkling like emeralds in the fire’s light. We’d come here, separately, to linger with friends, lavish in stories of travels and everyday life, and then listen to drumming and chanting far into the late evening.
I’d seen you before, but only from a distance. Now, you’d been close enough to observe. Your auburn curls dancing as you giggled at some joke I can no longer recall. I was mystified by your freckled face, trying to connect the dots in hopes of discovering your true essence. Fascinated by your pale, slim fingers flirting with a mutual friend’s legs. Oh how I wish you’d touched me that way.
I can still hear your angelic voice. Singing to a tune only you knew. Your sultry voice echoing through the forest, enchanting silent night creatures, like me. Soulful bellows so mournful that I cried. And then a sassy rendition of an Irish song that left me breathless and amused.
How I wish I’d had the courage to crouch down before you, confess my devotion and amazement of the goddess you are. Content to just be by your side for the countless hours we’d had left. And yet, as dawn approached, I cowered away, leaving you as only a memory and a dream.
