WRITING STYLES AND CONTENT

A Megastar DJ Asked Me to Write Lyrics, and They’re Done!!

Living in a country where mega is used for super, same difference

Is this really true? It sounds amazing!!

It’s true, a Megastar DJ asked me to write lyrics for a track that they’ve now producing, with the lyrics now written and submitted. Final production is due to start soon.

It is hard to believe, but very exciting at the same time.

Below are the typed extracts from my interview with KSW Artists. Questions asked listed in Bold.

Who is the DJ?

I respect the question and I’d love to tell you, but of course I can’t at this stage. I‘m not bound by confidentiality as I’ve been fully trusted, but as creators we all know to keep quiet until the work has been done.

Gratefully I’ve been allowed to promote it a little and take part in this interview, but I’d best not say anymore otherwise I might upset people.

How long did the lyrics take to write?

10-minutes. OK, if I’m being totally open, 30-minutes by the time I put them on digital paper, checked the background, did the formatting, etc.

Although the request to write was received at the end of last winter, a meeting didn’t take place until 3-weeks ago. Further details, comprising written brief, then arrived 3-days after that.

I listened to the track, bounced some ideas around in my head and as depicted in one of my own articles (below) found myself designing the lyrics both overnight and through the night, ready to type next morning.

This meant the lyrics were prepared and sent within 12-hours of final brief being received. Feedback has been positive, very positive in fact, the DJ now liaising with the singer for studio time.

What’s your background for writing music?

None. Writing for various productions and celebrities over the years, this was the first time I’d been asked to write a music draft, so it has been a learning curve for me.

This being a Dance Track, it’s easier to plan lyrics once a track has been created, not needing the lyrics or a singer beforehand. The track was therefore prepared early summer, awaiting lyrics to add with the singer now lined-up.

For Dance & House music, it’s apparently much easier to plan the lyrics once the music has been created and there is a beat!! That’s been very interesting to learn, so let’s see how it comes together.

Who is the singer?

I unfortunately can’t say any more on that either, but I know she’s a youthful, vibrant new talent that’s already sang on tracks played the world over, replayed on Radio Mixes and Club-Dance playlists.

Her clarity of voice is exceptional, myself having to study her voice for final decisions on the words to use, although everything came together nicely.

The track can therefore be created with full authenticity of the content and styles, nothing being changed or compromised to accommodate those involved, which I believe is unusual.

How did this all come about?

Nothing more than me just being ‘back on the market’ so to speak. I’ve been lucky enough to work in different professions, successfully conducting different jobs and roles over the years.

However when I look back, I realize my success comes from using the same sets of communications skills and engaging the same values.

Recently returning to my first love of creative writing and content, the DJ heard about this through word-of-mouth and Social Media, reaching out. A face-to-face meeting was then arranged when the track had been created.

It’s all been very organized and civilized to be fair, although still surprising it’s happened in many ways.

What processes did you use?

A mix and a blend. Anybody that has written lyrics, or even just listened to them in a song will understand the rhythmic, rhyming nature that’s engaged.

Music is a form of poetry in many respects, especially lyrics that are designed to rhyme. I’ve therefore used that structure but had to take note of the beat and pace of the track.

Did you do anything else for the track?

Yes I formatted the lyrical structure.

This wasn’t expected of me, but working to see how the lyrics would fit the track created, I sent through a format of where words and lyrics should be used in the track.

This was also set to timings I included in my submission, suggesting precisely how some of the words and lyrics should be sang and if music effects should be added.

In total, I designed approx. 40% of the track. I joked with the DJ that I’d best leave some of the work to them.

They found that funny and nodded their head in approval, so I know it’s been appreciated. It’s therefore been a paired creative process so far in many respects, which has also been good.

Do you think you’ll be asked to do anything else?

I’m not sure. At the moment it’s back to the DJ to complete the production, but I’ll be happy to help or advise further.

As I have a strong background in both Sales & Marketing there’s a chance I might be asked to help in promoting the track, but there seems to be a good music label involved so that might not be necessary.

Did you ever think you would be a music producer?

No, and I’m not to be fair. I’ve simply been asked to write lyrics, but it’s been tremendous getting involved in the process and I’ve learned a lot.

It’s also been enjoyable as music is a favorite past-time. I read a lot due to my background profession, but I’ll often sit back and stream music opposed to reading a book or novel when it comes to downtime.

What does the future hold?

Who knows and I’ll say, let’s wait to see how the final track turns out. I’ve worked the track through my mind countless times, so if the singer sings the words and styles to what they are capable of, it should come out well.

Would you do it again?

Of course, I loved it!! I seem to have a knack of creating text and titles very quickly, so I guess that’s a positive for any artist needing sets and lyrics, especially if they need them quickly.

The track is currently due for release Autumn 2023, with distribution now being designed. A number of DJ sets, concerts and radio plays have already been established heading into 2024. I look forward to keeping you posted!!
