My first Medium story. Began with great fun. There. I hit publish. Then it was done.

Yet, it was just the beginning. You see, I wanted success. For competition I love. Give me pressure and stress.

So I turned to the experts For they surely know best. With thousands of followers, They are highly blessed.

Writing advice poured in From all sides. These experts provided Many tips, tricks, and guides.

Your niche you must find. This is what they all said. Dear God, what’s my niche? I thought, with great dread.

But their advice, as you know, It didn’t stop there. On and on it continued, Leaving nothing to spare.

Now listen here, they all cried. Want to earn loads of money? Write what you know. And don’t try to be funny.

Increase your views! Their headlines did scream. Wait, nevermind. Not views. You need reads to get to your dream.

No! More important than reads. You must have many claps. Wait! Claps are old news. Get with it you saps.

Want to get to the top? Now curation is king. Not distributed in topics? Curation jail it will bring.

Oh no, don’t tell us you don’t have Your own publication? You won’t get very far then. Have fun in curation stagnation.

No, said the others. A publication is not what you need. You need newsletters to grow. The email list is the seed.

Followers! Followers! They all agreed. Gaining followers is the top of your goals. It becomes vague how you do this. Their expert advice began to grow holes.

Despite their advice Swirling fast through my brain. I carry on with my writing. I don’t make much of a change.

I no longer read their coaching. It works well for some. As for me, the truth is, It just makes me numb.

No more following their guides, I don’t know where my path lies. But Medium success for me now Means something different, I realize.

What I want from this place, Is my chance to write free. I have other sources of money. Here, I’m just going to be me.
