A Medium Conundrum Involving Grammarly
I love a good mystery — do you?
In a recent article, I mentioned I had downloaded a free Firefox version of Grammarly (pointedly suggested regarding a submitted article), and that it seemed to work everywhere other than on Medium. I was hoping for some helpful input, but the only thing I heard was a snarky note from a publication editor (paraphrased): that tons of other folks have figured it out and use free versions of Grammarly on Medium every day.
I felt pretty dumb. I’ve been accused of “playing dumb,” but really I am dumb — most of the time I’m playing smart. Sorry, I love that line from The West Wing, and couldn’t resist.
Anyway, I was happy for those Grammarly-proficient folks (and said so in response to The Snark), but my situation had not changed. When in Medium, my Grammarly icon had a red circle with a line through it, and when clicked said: “medium.com not supported.” It also said, “We currently do not check your text on this website.” It is saying all those things as I’m typing this article.
Well, despite a pretty solid education, I am still new to some things, and God help me, am perhaps not as bright as I look (er, or looked at some point); and so wasn’t sure what to do next. So, I cataloged the issue and filed it away in my tiny brain-attic (a la Sherlock Holmes).
And then voila! An amazing and wondrous thing happened! I submitted an article to the same publication, and The Snark helped me out again. It’s true that it was a rather rude and offensive way of succoring me, but in the resulting badinage, I noticed that while in the messaging bubble, Grammarly worked just fine.
Talk about serendipity. You know, in these days of trouble and confusion, when one must wonder if one’s perceptions are off, it is so nice to have even just a tiny piece of surety and clarity; or so I felt at that moment.
However (you knew a however was coming, right?), while Grammarly worked in the message bubble, and I could do a back-and-forth with The Snark using it, I still have the fundamental problem: it does not work while I’m writing an article. And as article writing is pretty much my entire purpose for being here, I’m feeling a little let down; that my parade has been deluged; and that my momentary message balloon has burst.
Rather a mystery and a conundrum, eh?
But I choose to be positive in viewpoint. I will hope for The Snark to return to help me with another article, and then at least my replies in the message bubble will be… Grammarlyed?
